How do I get someone to stop smoking?

How can I tell someone to stop smoking? She knows all the facts (it gives you cancer, emphysema, etc.), but she is young, so she still has that invincible mentality. What can I tell her about smoking’s cosmetic effects that will make her consider quitting? (besides the usual stains your teeth and your hands)
Thanks!

Why does emphysema continue to worsen even if I stop smoking ?

Ok, I got it that smoking has most likely caused my emphysema and I got it that emphysema is a non reversible condition. But why does emphysema gets worse, even if I stop smoking ? Does that mean that emphysema is a natural aging process just that in most cases people die for other reason before they’re getting diagnosed with emphysema ? And if yes, why does an (diagnosed) emphysema then develops faster than under the “regular” aging process ?

Have scientists finally created a ‘safe’ cigarette?

This new cigarette, which will satisfy nicotine cravings without the danger of lung cancer, emphysema or heart disease, has achieved almost mythical status in the industry.

Ways to make my mom quit smoking?

My grandpa died this january from emphysema. It seems like that would help my mom quit smoking, but she just won’t. She claims to want to stop, but “just can’t quit.”
Any suggestions on how I could help her quit?
Do/did you smoke cigarettes?

Stop Smoking Help » Why You Should Quit Right Now

There are a plethora of reasons why you should quit smoking.  For most, the obvious reason is that smoking can severely damage the lungs and will eventually kill most who smoke.  some who smoke will contract emphysema.  Emphysema will cause your lungs to contract and you will not be able to breathe well.

This lack of being able to breathe will mean that you will need to have an oxygen tank in order to live.  you will have to have this oxygen tank with you at all times to be able to give your body the oxygen it lacks due to your previous smoking habits.

You will also need the oxygen to help your heart.  many smokers understand the damage that smoking will cause to the lungs, but they miss that smoking puts a large strain on the heart.

When the blood is not getting enough oxygen, the heart needs to pump faster in order to get the correct amount of oxygen to the body.

This is why the heart can be strained and why, for those who have health problems due to smoking, may need to be on oxygen for the rest of their lives.  you will also have to quit smoking when you go on oxygen, it just makes sense to quit now before that need arises.

Here are some facts about what happens to your body when you quit smoking:

  1. 20 minutes after you stop smoking, your blood pressure and heart rate will decrease.
  2. 12 Hours after you quit smoking, the levels of carbon dioxide in your blood will return to normal levels
  3. 14 days after you quit smoking, you will experience an increase in circulation and an improvement in lung function
  4. Between one and nine months after you quit, things like shortness of breath, coughing and mucus build up will decrease. The cilia in your lungs will return to normal and go back to cleaning out your lungs and moving out the mucus
  5. At 12 months out, your risk of coronary heart disease will be cut in half
  6. 5 years after you stop smoking, your chances of having a stroke will be reduced to the same level as a non-smoker

The damage that is done to your lungs can repair themselves over time if you quit smoking.  it can take many years for your lungs to clean out all the toxins that you have been putting into them for so many years of smoking.  you will be surprised at just how well you will begin to feel after just a few months of dropping the habit.

Not only do your lungs become damaged from smoking, but your throat and mouth can also suffer the consequences as well.  many have had to have their voice boxes removed due to throat cancer.

The same can be said about the mouth as well, many smokers have had partial or full jaw removal due to mouth cancer that has been caused by smoking.  when you damage your lungs, the effects are internal and not seen by any without an x-ray.

For throat and mouth issues, you will have huge scars and that plastic surgery may not be able to cover up.  This is not only damaging to your body, but also to you appearance.  you will have to live with these scars for the rest of your life.  Having a damaged face may not seem like it will happen to you, but it can.

In many instances, you will lose more than just part of your face, mouth or throat; you can die from these types of cancer as well.  If it is not caught in time, you can lose your life as well.

It the health scares are not enough to encourage you to stop smoking, perhaps then the aesthetics of smoking will.  Smoking causes the mouth to grow wrinkles much quicker.

This is because of the constant puckering of lips when you drag on a cigarette.  you can always tell when a person is a smoker, they smell of stale smoke, it is in the hair, on the clothes and sometimes it can even be noticed as a smell on the skin.  Standing next to a person who smokes can be an unpleasant experience for the non smoker.

Finally, the cost of smoking is getting higher and higher each year.  many states are continually raising the taxes on what are considered luxuries.  you will be hard pressed to find a pack of cigarettes in the United States for less than five dollars.

When you have a three pack a day habit, this can be a very expensive addiction.  Even for a smoker who only smokes a pack every two days, this can add up to hundreds of dollars in just a few months.  Imagine the other necessities that can be purchased with the money saved when you quit smoking.

Your Questions About Help To Stop Smoking

Richard asks…

How can u get a junior high friend to stop smoking ciggeretts?

I have a very good friend and he wont stop smoking hes an 8th grader i want im to stop!!
what can i say?
can i even do enything?
i know this isnt a pregnancy question but no one else would answer
so please help me

Werner Michael answers:

Really there is nothing that you can say that is going to stop him/her from smoking. I am 59 years old and I smoked for 22 years. I started smoking when I was 15 years old. Everyone kept telling me to quit, but I was hard headed and I kept on smoking. I saw my father-in-law die with emphysema at the age of 67. He would take a puff off a cigarette and take a hit off of his oxygen tank. We couldn’t get him to quit either. At that time I had only been smoking for about 8 years so you could say that I saw cigarette smoking kill him and it didn’t make me quit. About 10 years later I was told by the doctor that I had emphysema and I continued smoking for another 3 years. So I guess your friend will quit when they are good and ready. The more you pressure them the more they will smoke. Maybe one of these days these DAMN FOOL that smoke will open there eyes and quit smoking. If it doesn’t kill them first.

David asks…

How can I get my sister to stop smoking?

My sister has been smoking for a long time, and she’s tried to stop SEVERAL times, but I was wondering what some ways you people stopped smoking, or what a good idea would be to help her stop? (She also lives with her smoking husband, and I want to help him stop too.)

Werner Michael answers:

I used to smoke about a pack and a half every day for about 6 years, and have tried numerous ways to quit. The patch in my opinion doesnt work, and niether does hypnotism. I took a pill called “Chantix” and that work really well. The pill binds to the receptors in the brain that nicotine attaches to releasing seritonin (a pleasure inducing horomone), leaving no room for the actual nicotine. This pretty much creates an effect on the same level of drinking but not being able to get intoxicated. In other words the user gets none of the pleasurable effects of smoking. But also the first three days of not smoking is getting over the side effects of smoking, the rest of the time is merely breaking the habbit (for most people this is the problem). Also, the person has to have the desire to quit, otherwise no method will help. Nagging about smoking and showing pictures of the damages of smoking will not help a person quit, most smokers find it rather anoying. Good luck hope your sister can quit!

Sandy asks…

How hard is it to stop smoking if you started at 12yrs old and now your45yrs old?

What other things can help a person stop smoking for good other than death?

Werner Michael answers:

Any man worth his salt will say that its almost impossible.

But, then on reality, nothing is impossible. If you have to do it, you do it.

Due to the unpleasantness of the withdrawal symptoms, people who try to quit smoking end up replacing the cigarettes with some other type of addiction. This may be an addiction to prescription medication, such as sleeping tablets or tranquilizers, or an addiction to food. While you will definitely experience the health benefits of giving up nicotine, no one wants to replace one addiction with another!

A healthy diet, adequate exercise as well as natural and holistic treatments such as acupuncture, massage and herbal and homeopathic remedies can also help the smoker overcome nicotine addiction. Herbal and homeopathic treatments are a safe and effective means to reduce nicotine cravings (without giving you more nicotine) and will also help to prevent weight gain and alleviate anxiety and irritability. Basically, natural and holistic treatments not only lessen the urge to smoke, but also help you to restore balance in your body.

There are a number of ingredients such as Avena sativa, Garcinia cambogia and Gotu Cola (Centella asiatica) which will help to address the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. They reduce nicotine cravings and balance the mood.

Behavioral Treatments

Behavioral treatments employ a variety of methods to assist smokers in quitting, ranging from self-help materials to individual counseling. These interventions teach individuals to recognize high-risk smoking situations, develop alternative coping strategies, manage stress, improve problem solving skills, as well as increase social support.

How should I tell someone to stop smoking ?

I am really close to the person in my family, who is smoking and she is about 36. I am worried because she has been smoking since she was about 19 or 20. I am worried she will get Lung Cancer or Emphysema but she is stubborn and doesn't listen. I don't know how to convince her to stop smoking because i don't want he to pass away when i' at a young age . Plus she smokes about 6-7 a day. how should i tell her ?

You can tell her and tell her to quit smoking but the oinly thing thats going to do is make her angry at you for telling her what to do. she will stop when she wants to stop. Some people LIKE smoking, regartdless what it does to their health. Smoking is a personal decision and we cant get people to quit until it is banned and deemed toxic from our gvmtYou should talk to her, ask her how she feels about the health risks of smoking. by finding out why she smokes may help you accept her decision to smoke.

,

I was able to kick the habit once I got pregnant with my first son. for me the thought of my child being healthy was enough to make me quit.

My husband decided to quit with me and had a much tougher time until he discovered the 'Quit Smoking Today' program. He found that the system was easy to use and that the NLP technology really helped him overcome the addiction.

To be honest, Michael
there is not much you can do about it
ultimately it is up to the person, and you can give as much love as you want, but in time she will realise that life has more to offer her then a pack of devil sticks

Point a gun to there head and make them stop simple as pie.

Suddley hint it to them with a connect the dots puzzle.

You have to stop smoking.
