Lung cancer: Study shows 20 percent reduction in mortality with low-dose CT vs chest X-ray
Scientists have found a 20 percent reduction in deaths from lung cancer among current or former heavy smokers who were screened with low-dose helical computed tomography (CT) versus those screened by chest X-ray. This finding provides a more extensive analysis of the data originally reported in November 2010 while providing additional data to the public and research community without barriers to …

Sandra asks…
Please help me stop smoking marijuana!?
I started smoking my senior year like 3years ago and i have smoked daily since but i really need to quit because…. well here is a list
1. my life feels like it is going nowhere
2. im extremely lazy i never want to do anything but stay in my room even it it means just laying in my bed thinking for hours at a time
3. im pretty sure its making me antisocial, i never want to go out and when i am going out im never excited about it anymore and i cant keep in touch with any of my friends i barley even like answering my phone incase someone wants me to “hangout.” bottom line is i’d rather smoke alone and in a smokers world thats strange
4. it makes me Studder and even though i know big words fairly well i need to think about them before i say them now
5. it makes me a little to outgoing when im around people i feel like im talking way to fast and too much, people say im really funny but i think its just because they think im weird
6. I spend money on it everyday… literally everyday
Can someone please help me i have tried to quit a few times but it only last 2days or less i give in so fast and easy its like i wasnt even trying to stop especially if its free…. does anyone have any mental or physical tips? im so tired of this lifestyle because if i stay on this track i am going to die a loser for sure and i really want to make something of myself to make my mom proud before its to late.
O and im trying to quit cigarettes at the same time is this a good idea? or should i quit 1 at a time?

Werner Michael answers:
I have been through it before. You just have to make it through the first week and remember the longer you go the less you will want to smoke. I smoked daily (all day) for 6 yrs…..SO I got u beat. Lol. Just kidding. I can’t imagine anyone being more addicted than I was but what helped me was reading the bible daily and exercising when I felt the urge to smoke. Its all in your mind really. You will have trouble sleeping the first week or so and feel a little down but just remember what you are gaining. And what are you losing? NOTHING. Temptation will be there but it is important not to dwell on it, that just makes it worse. Bottom line is you don’t need it. Right now you just think you do. That’s what helped me. I hope it helps you!! Good Luck and just remember people have been through a lot tougher times in their lives and if they could do that you can do this. YOU CAN DO THIS. I promise.

Ruth asks…
How do I get my pothead boyfriend to stop smoking weed?
I used to smoke weed a little bit, and I stopped from a bad experience. So I started to see this guy, and we have been dating for almost 6 months now. He has been a heavy pot smoker for about 6 years. Smoking every single day, always wanting to be high every second. I tried with holding sex but that just doesn’t work. Oh but he is in University, getting alright grades, but he’s lazy and doesn’t have a job, and doesn’t like to be a clean person. But he’s super nice. He also doesn’t seem to care about things (like me) when he’s high. He will forget to call me, make me all worried, stuff like that. Then he will say sorry all the time to me. “I fell asleep” is usually the excuse.
How do I make him see that he is going to ruin his life by smoking pot all the time? I can understand a weekend thing, but I think the situation is either he does it or he doesn’t. I know he is strong enough to stop, I just want some way to show him he can do it. He does a “Smoke free friday” with me where he doesn’t smoke for that one day a week. And right now he is on a “Whole week” of not smoking weed for me. I’m the only person he knows who doesn’t smoke weed, all his friends do it, and he lives with roommates who only smoke pot too. So that would make it hard for him because I know weed is a mental addiction. Not as much physical as cigarettes.
Oh, that’s another thing, if he does stop smoking somehow, how do I make it so he doesn’t start to abuse something else like cigarettes or acid or something.
If you have experience with this or know what to do, etc please help me! Thanks so much!! =)!!

Werner Michael answers:
‘Sorry, but it ain’t gonna happen.
He’s only going to quit when he has a reason he can buy into. I don’t see anything in your narrative that suggests such a reason.
Then there is the rebellion part. He thinks it’s neat to be naughty.
Live with it for you and your kids or move on now

Lizzie asks…
How can I help someonee stop smoking?
Can you give me a website where there are very discriptive pictures of the negative effects of smoking, or give me really heart touching reasons to make him quit. Thanks
P.S: 35 YEAR OLD MALE
HAS BEEN SMOING FOR 15 YEARS
MAY HAVE CHILDREN
Need more info feel free to IM me

Werner Michael answers:
Quite honestly, there is almost nothing you can do to “make” someone quit smoking. They HAVE to want to do it for themselves.
I was a smoker for ten years when I met my future husband. He was anti-smoking, but even that didn’t deter me. I just did my best to hide my habit behind air freshener and toothpaste. Finally he said we couldn’t get married if I was a smoker. Even THAT didn’t do the trick. I wish I could remember what it was that finally tipped the scales and got me to quit, but it was a sudden decision.
The only words of advice I can give is to focus on the positive rather than the negative. Tell your friend that you will be as supportive as you can as he goes through the inevitable withdrawal. The first three days are terrible; the next week is a little better, and it gets easier after that. But the craving really never goes away… Even now, 20 years after quitting, I will occasionally get a whiff of a cigarette and for an instant want to try one again.
Good luck.

Robert asks…
How do i get my mom to stop smoking?
My birthday is coming up, and all I really want is my mom to stop smoking. She started smoking when she was 13 and stopped when she got pregnant. But last year she started again. She smokes whenever my friends are around and its really embarrassing because they all have smoke free parents. Our class spent a long time learning about the bad effect on smokers. She smokes about 6 cigarettes a day, and since today the taxes on cigarettes went up I’m hoping she’ll reduce that. She knows I don’t like it but she always sticks her f**king cigarette in my face! I can’t stand the smoke and lately she gets really mad and has major breakouts towards me and my brothers. She is really annoying me with this and we never get to do stuff together anymore! We always have sloppy dinners, and when we have a nice dinner, it’s usually burnt because she’s sitting outside all the time. I really want some help! Please help me?

Werner Michael answers:
She is an adult. You are the child. You don’t get her to do anything. She gets you to do things. That’s a benefit of being a parent. If you’re lucky enough to become one, you’ll understand that.
As for your friends. Smoke free parents? All of them? Oh please. You know what the odds of that would be? Very high. Trust me, some of your friends have parents who smoke. They just tell you they don’t, because they know it upsets you easy. They just won’t make a federal case out of it, like you are doing.
My grandparents are 87 and 83 and have been smoking for over 60 years, with no signs of quitting. They are healthier than most non smokers in their 50′s. I bet your school withheld that, didn’t they? People can smoke and live a long life still.
If second hand smoke was as dangerous as people believe it is, there would be nobody alive in their 50s and 60s. I bet they left that out too? Everybody up until the 90′s smoked, and nobody got asthma from smoking. If that were true, 75% of the population would have asthma. All the schools are trying to do is put a scare into you. What you don’t realize is, the teachers who show you this, end up in the lounge for a smoke break.
So just relax before you stroke out. Stress will kill you before any cigarettes will.

William asks…
Really trying to stop smoking?
Now I know this sounds bad, please don’t judge, because I really want to quit: I am almost 7 months pregnant and still smoke. My fiance has been smoke free for about a week and a half. He has been using the patch. I know I can’t use patches or the gum because I’m pregnant and so here’s the thing: it makes it easier to smoke much less now that he doesn’t smoke. Sometimes I go half the day without thinking about cigarettes or wanting one, but once I get some, I’m all over them-then I don’t smoke for half a day. I don’t get it. I don’t know if it would be easier to quit all together, or try to cut down to 2 or 3 a day, but then it’s only 2 or 3-what would even be the point of smoking? I just want to be smoke free for my baby and this is driving me nuts. It really makes me feel like crap! I want to quit and feel fine for so long, but then I just end up having one. Are there any tools I can use to help me quit other than patches and nicotene gum?

Werner Michael answers:
Hey! Don’t feel bad and don’t listen to the negative comments you are sure to get. People don’t realize how hard it is to quit, and think that we just don’t care about our babies. And that is not the case. At least your trying to quit and reaching out for help. I smoked up until about 6 weeks ago.. It was so hard quitting. Cutting back really helped and then one day I just decided there was no way I could do it anymore. I bought one last pack and told myself that was it. Its been a struggle but what helped me is really cold water. I always have a bottle with me and it seems weird but every time I want one, i just start drinking water and it helps. I also chew on pens a lot, its the whole hand to mouth thing. Try chewing some minty gum or eating peanuts. That helped my dad quit. He smoke for 30 years and quit so anyone can do it.. Good luck and don’t get discouraged. Your taking the right steps!!

Your Questions About Stop Smoking Help Pack

Lizzie asks…
Stop smoking??????????
This is a cry for help. I’m fifteen I’ve been smoking for about three years now. Three! Very heavy smoker use to be able to smoke up two packs easily this year went down to about one… then for the past week ive been down to 9 ciggerates.. and im now im starting to get right back to one pack. There’s a history of cancer on both sides of my family, and I really don’t want to lose my life before I have the chance to grow up completely and see my future, I’m asking for you guys to just guide me through this, what can I do to effectively stop me from smoking the nicotine patches aren’t doing it, and ive got a pretty good amount of will power i guess, but probably not enough if im not pulling through. If any of you have smoked and quit please tell what is the most effective way just to get it out of your head, and never turn back because I can’t! I also must add its difficult to, when theres other people who smoke around you, i just need to get the umph to get out of the room though.

Paul asks…
please help. my dad wont stop smoking.he smokes about a pack a day.what should i do?
i dont know what to do. the other day a father of a dear friend passed away due to a heart attack. and i dont want the same thing to happen to my dad. i need him and he needs me. i begged him a few days ago. pleading and crying just to make him stop smoking. i seriously dont know what to do. my mom died a few years ago and i only rely on my dad. and i dont wanna lose him. im just depressed day by day. any advice? thank you for answering this question. i appreciate it a lot cause im so sad right now. God bless you all.

Werner Michael answers:
Smoking can be a very difficult thing for some people to give up. There are various reports about the effects of smoking, and it can depend greatly on the health and lifestyle of the individual as to how the habit will affect them. Some people live to 100 years or more and smoke most of that time with little or no effect. Others die of lung cancer or other respiratory diseases caused by smoking in their 30′s and 40′s.
I started smoking when I was very young (5 or 6 years old) and stopped a few years ago of my own desire after 20 years of smoking. I do not have any apparent effects from smoking, but I know my breathing is easier now that I have stopped. It was not difficult for me to stop because it was in my own time and my own program. But if you try to force stopping on someone it can be even more difficult for them and for you.
Perhaps the best thing is not to try and pressure your Dad. My father died in a traffic accident when I was very young, so it would not have mattered if he gave up smoking or not (and he did smoke quite heavilly). The point is, your Dad may not be affected by smoking, so enjoy his life with you as much as you can, just in case some other thing takes him from you. In time he may well come to understand that smoking is not the healthiest habit to have and he may give it away of his own volition.

Nancy asks…
if you were offerd a guide that would help you stop smoking for the same price as a pack of cigarettes?
, it would not claim ultimate success but with hard work would help you quit, taking you through stages of stoping and give you tell tale signs of avoiding starting again, would you buy it?

Werner Michael answers:
Why not. I have tried several other products and Im still smoking. And the costs of some of these are prohibitive the cigs were cheaper. So Yes I would try

Daniel asks…
What is the best wat to stop smoking?
I’m pregnant and I need to stop smoking I smoke like half a. Pack a day I need your help desperately

Werner Michael answers:
Remeber this every time you smoke a cigarette it takes away six minutes of your life. So that’s six minutes less you get to spend with your baby/family/loved ones.
That’s how I got my mom to quit.

Susan asks…
Has anyone used ativan to stop smoking?
I have been prescribed lexapro and ativan from my doctor for a depression/anxiety issue. The medication is working well I think. I smoke about a pack a day and really want to quit. I can’t do it on my own. I tried many times. Has anyone stopped smoking while on these meds? Does ativan help reduce nicotine fits?

Werner Michael answers:
No the only prescription drug that works for smoking or to stop smoking is a pill called Zyban. It was also primarily used for depression and then they found out that it also helps people to stop smoking. Good Luck I have also decided never to smoke again 9 days ago…….without pills or anything. It is so hard, but I have made up my mind, too scared of cancer.

Donna asks…
How can i help my mom stop smoking?
she wants to quit she started about 5 years ago and i think she said she smokes a half pack a day. Help me help her.

Werner Michael answers:
The only person that can help your mom is herself. She has to be willing to quit, because you can’t just force someone to quit that easily.

Jenny asks…
How can I help my dad stop smoking?
He is 58 now and he is too unhealthy. He might have emphysema, he has an enlarged heart, horrible lungs, and a bunch of other stuff because he smokes.
What can I do to help him quit? He smokes around 2 packs per day and says it’s impossible for him to quit, but he needs to or he’s gonna die.

Werner Michael answers:
Get him an electric cigarette. It will give him the nicotine he craves in a less harmful application then regular cigarettes. He will save money too, I was a two pack a day smoker and it only costs me $60 a month to smoke my ecig.
Once he is completely off regular cigarettes slowly reduce the nicotine in the refill liquid. After a few months he can be nicotine free and not even know it.
I say that jokingly, but you could easily make that work.

Joseph asks…
Help my preggo sister to stop smoking?
My sister is 9 weeks pregnant and has been trying to cut back on smoking. She usually smokes a pack every 3 days I suppose so I don’t think she would be considered a heavy smoker. I myself was never a smoker, so I personally dont’ understand how she can’t just stop cold turkey for the sake of her baby but I’m just trying to be supportive of her. Does anyone have any suggestions for what my sister could do to stop smoking?
