How can I get my girlfriend to stop smoking?

My girlfriend is 17, has been smoking for about a year now. I’m trying to get her off it, but she refuses. She always tells me she knows what she’s doing, she knows its hurting her, and she can stop whenever she wants. I find that hard to believe, because she always ‘needs’ one, and she freaks if she doesn’t. The least she smokes a day is 5, but that’s a rare thing, its almost always more. What can I do to stop her?

    Talk to her about it.

    Honestly, you can’t.
A smoker will not commit to “quitting” unless they want to.

You can’t get her to stop. It has to be her decision, and if you keep getting on her case about it she’s going to resent you for it and it’s going to cause problems. I guess you need to ask yourself if you’re willing to continue the relationship. Personally, I wouldn’t date a smoker — it’s too difficult to watch someone willingly destroying themself.

Lol you probably can’t do this to her, but I sawon tv that there was this mom who used this tactic to get her teens to stop: Every time she would catch them, she would make them eat two unlit cigarettes lol

She’ll stop when she wants to, not because you want her to. If you don’t like it, say goodbye, you are way too young to be dealing with things like that, it’s not worth the aggravation. There are plenty of non smokers out there.

hmmm… my grandma used to smoke when she was living with us and to make her stop i kept throwing her cigarettes away lol. everytime i saw a pack i would throw them in the trash. even her stash i would throw away. she eventually got tired of wasted money because she still had to pay for other stuff so that plus i had to talk to her. that made her quit. also my dad used to until my mom got pregnant. he knew it was gonna harm me in my mommas stomache so he eventually stopped.

1.Buy her that water vapor smoker.
    2. before you give it to her, say “over 200 CHEMICALS in cigarettes cause CANCER.” Give her the wrapped/put in a bag water vapor cigarette and tell her “this does no damage, but it still feels like a real cigarette.”
    3. (not necessary) Break all her cigarettes when you can, so if she reaches for one they’ll all be broken.

Give her something else to suck on.

Honestly, getting someone else to quit nicotine is near impossible. The withdraw is so intense for that person they would not want to quit. I would tell her to quit and help her see through the withdraws (nausea, headaches, fatigued, etc.) Tell her that you personally have no idea what it feels like to go through the quitting process, but you understand that it is a very real thing quitters go through. Trust me I’ve been there.

If you hate smoking. Don’t date smokers. That’s just common sense.
If you don’t like what’s on the shelf, leave it for someone who will like it.

    You have a couple options:

    1. Do nothing. But you probably don’t want to do that, and you probably should not do that.
    2. Tell her if she loves you and herself and her life, to stop now. At this rate, she’ll one day lose her voice, make her skin bad, her hair bad, everything permanently smell bad, she’ll lose friends over it, too. And health if she keeps it up, it’ll take a toll.
    3. Squeal on her! I don’t care! Tell her parents, and get them to somehow find out, without her knowing you filled them in. This is serious. Smoking is an addiction. Addictions are, well…you know. It’s not easy. She needs help, she needs love, she needs support. Do something.

  • Josh says:

It’s not uncommon for teen smokers to think they can still quit anytime they want and then discover, when they do try, that they’re already hooked. In any case, there isn’t terribly much you can do to get her to stop, other than expressing your wish and offering your support if she does decide to try. She’s made her decision and it’s her life. Most attempts to stop smoking fail even when the smoker is highly motivated.
