YAO MING CALLS IT QUITS AFTER EIGHT NBA SEASONS!
Yao’s great size and bulk proved to be too much for his body to handle the rigors of 82-regular game seasons.
Houston Rockets center YAO MING has decided to retire after eight seasons in the NBA. the 30-year old “Great Wall from China,” who controlled the paint for the Rockets from 2002-2010, based his decision on his recurring injury problems which kept him sidelined for most of the last three seasons.
Yao suffered a stress fracture to his left ankle last December which required season-ending surgery. this after the seven-foot-six All-Star was sidelined with a hairline fracture in his left foot during the playoffs against the Lakers in 2009.
It’s sad and really unfortunate that Yao ends his career so prematurely. He was just beginning to reach a comfort zone and show his dominance in the league after a tentative start to his NBA career as the No. 1 overall pick by Houston in 2002. “the Great Wall” averaged 19-and-9 throughout his career.
Now the question becomes where does Yao rank among the greatest NBA centers…and more importantly, will his injury-plagued career prevent him from entering the basketball Hall of Fame?
I certainly hope not. his mere size and great post-play talents puts him there easily…in spite of an abbreviated, unfulfilled career.
