Of course they are are robbing you, a long time ago i said to a friend that when cigarettes get to $2.00 a packet i would give up, guess what i gave up when they were $12.00. It is unbelievable what they are getting out of a pack of cigarettes. Best to get rid of Rudd

they estimated around 100 000 would stop smoking due to the increase, I would imagine it will be way less though, and it is not really much compared to the like 3 or 4 million who smoke on this continent

People that are seriously addicted to smoking will not be able to stop smoking just because the prices have gone up. (I myself do not smoke but I am friends with people who are smokers. )They will be seriously affected though as they will be paying more for cigarette packets thus spending more money. It will stop some people from smoking, but raising the prices of cigarettes will not stop people from smoking. Other measures must be taken and it’s up to the government to deliver.
Quite frankly, I’m sick of the government and how Kevin Rudd is becoming the new Robin Hood-
stealing from the higher income earners to give to the homeless and poor
- it might sound noble, but it is seriously affecting people who are bothered to put in the effort to gain money. the government are just giving away our money to the poor to gain more votes.

Wow! $14.00 a pack? They’re $10.00 in Hawaii and going to go up! Plus some medical insurance companies are going to raise rates for smokers! I gave up the Benson and Hedges menthol lights but…secretly I have a pack stashed away. Darn it where are they! Honest I have a pack somewhere in a zip-lock bag!

They have just gone up in New Zealand too! Only 10% (and that was overnight..but 24% for roll your owns) but another 10% next year and then 10% the year after so they will be $17 in 2years time.
I say take it up MORE! I HATE smelling and breathing in the vile stuff and I hate seeing people smoke, so I hope it goes up more in the years to come!!

I must say I do hope it does stop people from smoking, I know it’s each their own but I’m 7 months pregnant and my partner still smokes before I fell pregnant he promised that when I did he would give up smoking.. It’s only made his smoking worse, A pack of 20 would last him a week, now it lasts him two days if I’m lucky, If I can’t have maccas (I’m honestly addicted to their fries) every time he has a smoke then I call it’s unfair and he should give up. mwahahaha

I don’t smoke; never will, but I don’t see the point in increasing the price to stop people. We all know it’s not going to make majority of the smokers population quit, but just get put further behind in the bank! There are much bigger problems! Drugs people my age (16) are using scares me to death. That is what needs to be gone!

And I can say that … because i AM a smoker….
It is an expensive, smelly, dirty, stinky habit … And … While i do enjoy smoking .. I resent the money that I foolishly hand over… I don’t really resent the tax part of it.. as I know it mostly goes into the health system….
We’re cutting back.. if not trying to stop all together… there are so many other things we could be spending our money on….
And don’t fool yourself.. it isn’t just *THIS GOVERNMENT*… they all know we’re suckers… and while numbers MIGHT drop off .. there will always be the suckers who keep smoking
