What can I do to get these people to stop smoking?

We just moved to a condo building (coachhouse) 4 units per building. These neighbors smoke and we can smell it in our unit and the hallway. I am severely allergic to the smell of smoke. What can I do to make these people stop? Our landlord does to and we are in a two year lease. What do we do? Someone please help. We are in Illinois.

Nothing. You can ask if there is a condo available in another unit where there aren’t any smokers…or you can move.

Does they have a smoke free build that you can move to? To get people to stop smoking is impossible. They got to have a strong desire to stop. X smoker If you can not fine a place, get a statement from your Doctor. This way you have a good cause to break your lease.

No idea if this would work – but contact your organisation that deals with giving up smoking in the USA (its ASH in the Uk – ash.org.uk) They might know of a way to use anti smoking legislation to get your landlord to put in better air filters etc. Or try moving!

You have a tough road ahead. The laws haven’t gone as far as limiting people from smoking in their own home, which is what you are asking. Many states (PA, NJ, NY) have laws prohibiting people from smoking in public places (restaurants, bars, casinos) but everyone is still allowed to smoke in their private home.

You may need to move if the landlord will let you out of the lease.

    Good Luck!

You’re out of luck. I sympathize, as I have smoke allergy too. Get yourself some air cleaners.
Talk to your landlord about breaking your lease. You may be able to break it on legal grounds–if your allergy constitutes a disability. Next time, prior to renting, check out whether it’s a nonsmoking building, and if not, the ventilation system.

What you need to do is, move to Montana, and buy a cabin out in no mans land somewhere, where it’s just you and your family. No other people around you. You away from society. That way you won’t be able to complain about people smoking ever again.
You’ll grow old, and lonely. Maybe even go crazy out there, but at least there’s no one to smoke by you.
    I hope this helps.

It would have to be a smoke free building for you to do anything. We are fast running out of places where we can smoke in public, but so far we are still entitled to smoke in our own home. If you are so severely allergic it might be best if you found a single family home to rent or buy.
