Suggestions on how to quit smoking?

I will be going to Mexico very soon to finally meet my mother-in-law, and I’m super excited!!!
I’ve been wanting and trying to quit smoking cigarettes for many years now… and altho sometimes I succeed, it’s always temporary. I’m a recovering alcoholic/addict, and I’ve managed to stay away from that for quite some time now… I think that cigarette smoking should be next =)
Therefore, I not only want to quit because I’m going to meet my in-laws, but quite frankly for “my health”. I’m in my early 40′s and I think it’s time =)
But I also want to make this effort because I don’t want to meet my in-laws as a hard-core smoker (lol, sorry). Any suggestions? Anything out there that others have tried and succeeded?
Many thanks!

PS: I ran into an old best friend of mine last month, and she told me she has throat cancer due to smoking! That’s really scary!

Good for you for kicking your other addictions. I quit smoking by talking to my doctor and pharmacist first. They set me up with a nicotine gum plan to wean me off cigarettes and then off the gum. It worked and I haven’t smoked since (this was many years ago). I suggest doing that – nicotine replacement therapy (gum, patches etc) are more effective than going cold turkey.

Complete health and peaceful mind are the roots of an ideal man. Both are interrelated in someway. If there is no health, a peaceful mind will be only a dream. Both health and peaceful mind will not come to you. You should attain that by good diet and practicing yoga.

Honestly, the best way to quit is cold turkey. This isn’t me saying this, because I still smoke, but from all people I know, they quit cold turkey with no quitting aids. Oddly, I too was a heavy drinker and I decided to stop completely recently, but one thing at a time for me.
The best advice I can give you is to throw away everything that reminds you of smoking (ashtrays, lighters, etc..) and to start cleaning everything that has the smell of smoke on it, that means your clothes, your house and linens (if you smoked inside your house) your car and anything else that might remind you of smoking. The most important part though, is to make sure you’re ready for this. You have to want this through and through, because when that craving hits, you have to remain steadfast in your determination. However you quit your other addictions, try using what worked with those and use the same techniques with quitting cigarettes.

Have you tried IST? It may help, especially if you have tried and failed with other methods.

You should really try Green Smoke http://www.greensmoke.com/disc10-22656 I’ve been using it for a week now and i can already feel the difference. switching to this electric cigarette really helps because I know I’m not going to die from this like I would from cigarettes and it feels just the same when you smoke it. It also come in lots of flavor and its way cheaper in the long run than buying cigarettes. I’ve tried many different ways to quit smoking cigarettes and this seems like the best alternative.

If you are still smoking and want to quit, consider the following:
    1) The cost alone of smoking is .20 cents a cigarette.
    2) The study of Tobacco use and health effects is quite evident (wikipedia:Health Effects of Tobacco)
    3) Patches are readily used as an alternative to slowly quit smoking.
    4) The new e cigarette (wikipedia : Electronic Cigarette)
    5) Some have used a Nicolette gum.

I was fortunate enough in 73 to put them down when they went from 50 to 55 cents a pack, said enough was enough, plus I did not enjoy smoking that much anyways.
Also many say it is a pacification routine and have known many who have a small straw to inhale through or use candy canes or like as a pacification.
I have watched my wife who smokes 2 packs a day think she has lite up a cigarette and smoke it, though it is not lit and goes through all the motions of smoking the cigarette as though it was lit? Interesting to analyze.
