Stop smoking and weight loss support groups?
I’m trying to help and support my sister in her attempt to stop smoking. Each time she’s tried, she ends up gaining weight, and with a lifestyle quite stressful, she returned to cigarettes.
If anyone has any good information about online support groups, messageboards, or an easy way to talk with others in the same boat, I think it might help her.
She’s a beautiful person and been there for me a lot, but I don’t know how to help her do this. She’s a great wife and mother, (never smokes in the house or car around the kids) and unlike many who smoke WANTS to quit.
Those things are so addictive. She knows how harmful it is, and feels so stupid for smoking, which then makes her depressed.
She had some success with the patch, so is starting that and Weight Watchers, and an excercise group she enjoys.
She lives in a small town, and will attend WW meetings, but it doesn’t seem enough support to get through such a tough struggle.
Thanks for any help.

help her by paying the copay for her Chantix prescription.
This is a great website that I used to help me stop smoking. It will allow your sister to set a quit date and then once she quits, it adds up all the money she has saved and all the hours added to her life from quitting!! It’s very inspirational and she could even upgrade her membership to make friends that have quit too (i didn’t do that part).

Also, I have used the Quit Now hot-line here in Ohio. Not sure where she lives, but most states have their own program. She can call up a “quit coach” anytime she gets a craving. They will also call her once a week to follow up and see how she is doing. As for the weight loss, it’s not a good idea to try and do everything all at once. I quit smoking for two weeks and then decided to start dieting and exercising more. There will be a natural weight gain from quitting the nicotine, but it’s much healthier than smoking!! I hope this helps…I’ve been smoke-free for 22 days now!!
