How long do you have to quit smoking before you are considered a non-smoker?
My spouse and I quit smoking about a month ago and we were wondering when we were considered to be ‘non-smokers’ for our life insurance.

could be 6 months possibly 3
It is one year for underwriting purposes, but the effects of smoking do not completely vanish for 15 years. It takes 3-9 months to gain 10% of the lung capacity you’ve lost, 48hrs for all nicotine to leave bloodstream, and 2 weeks for your circulation to begin to increase. If you have a claim within the first 2 years of your policy the provider will do their best to decline the claim, so choose your answers on the application wisely. If a policy today is imperative and you can’t afford the smoker rates, wait at least 90 days to apply as a non-smoker. Just remember the insurance company will do their best to decline any claims during the first 2 years of the policy, so if you can document the QUIT time (maybe with a doctor) and apply for a policy at the 1 year mark, you will save yourself a lot of money and uncertainty during the first 2 years of your policy.
