For Christians, is it wrong for me to do hypnotherapy to quit smoking?

I realize that God does not want us to “empty” our minds and be open to whatever, but if I have a therapist that i trust, isn’t this better than continuing with this addiction that I can’t seem to break? It has worked for so many people. I am a little confused. How can this turn out bad for me if I quit smoking? I HAVE tried prayer, but I guess I’m just weak and need to take more steps. Do you think this is ok?

It’s more of a sin to continue to smoke when you know you are harming your body. So if it works, go for it!

I do not think it is good to ever give control of your mind over to someone else. God does forgive all sins if we ask Him

As long as no one tries to turn you against God during the sessions. To quit smoking is a very wonderful thing and God would want you to. I don’t think God would mind.

i DO NOT THINK IT WOULD BE A SIN TO TAKE RESPONSIBLE ACTION FOR THE HEALTH OF YOUR GOD GIVEN BODY, BUT FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND HYPNOTHERAPY MERELY PUSHES THE CRAVINGS DOWN BEYOND THE CONSCIOUS MIND; BUT CHECK ON THAT POINT.

  • Truth says:

When you undergo hypnosis you are opening your mind to suggestion, not only from your therapist, from anywhere. You are also weakening your mind so that if you repeatedly undergo hypnosis you will automatically go into a hypnotic state in the beginning of the session.

    I myself find it dangerous.

    Of course not!
I know of Christian psychiatrists who use hypnosis as a therapy for age regression & behavior modification.
I’ve taken a number of courses in hypnosis for the purpose of improving my prayer/meditation life. It works.
    It’s intense relaxation.
    You won’t lose your faith.

    Love,
    Jim

Have you tried the nicotine patches? You can get them over-the-counter. My mom had a smoking habit but when she became a Christian she decided that she did not want to smoke anymore. She kicked her habit through prayer and willpower. God can modify a your behavior, emotional content, and attitudes better than hypnotherapy but if you prefer to use it and it works for you, then go for it.

You can try it. I am ok with it. But I know a woman that tried it. It didnt work she still smokes but with a difference… she cries everytime she smokes.

I would suggest taking a friend to set quietly during the session and having them record the session to protect yourself if your therapist has a problem with it find a new therapist.

I believe that God does not want us to sit away waiting for him to fix all our problems. He will not move the mountain for us until we begin taking steps toward it with the faith that he will move it. So you need to do more than just pray and wait. You need to begin to take steps toward your goal if you want God to help you, even if this is hypnotherapy (which isn’t “emptying your mind”).

However, as an aspiring psychiatrist, I also know that hypnotherapy is not always effective. Hypnosis can only make you do what you are truly willing to do in the first place. If you are not willing to try to quit on your own, then I don’t know how effective hypnosis would be for you at the moment. I’d suggest using your willpower first to begin trying to cut down on cigarettes and perhaps using nicotine patches to wean your body off of the chemicals (neurotransmitters to be exact) that you are addicted to. When you feel the urge to smoke, pray and read the Bible. When you have cut down the cigarettes, THEN I’d say go for the hypnotherapy.

But again, I’m only studying psychiatry in school right now. I’m not a real doctor. But this is my suggestion based on what I’ve learned in school and what I’ve seen happen in real life. Its a matter of willpower and will cannot be magically granted through God or through hypnosis.

I’m a Christian and I smoke. I have tried the hypnotherapy and it didn’t work for me. I quit for three months due to heavy allergies and went back to doc a wreck. He said, as much as I disapprove of smoking you have a choice to have a heart attack, get on pills for nerves or go back to smoking. I chose smoking of course. Now what he told me has worked for years. He told me to get on the lowest tar and nicotine that I could find, the longest I could find and then only smoke half of it because the strong nicotine is at the bottom of the cigs….he said to smoke outside, not in my car etc because that will also help the smell of course but cut down on my smoking. For years I have done this, nerves are better, cigs are smoked in half, not in my house, nor my car and so far living happily ever after…..with no morning cough and hack….yeaaaaaaa and I ain’t a young pup either…*G*
    Good Luck

    Hello Coco

Hypnosis is natural, we all enter a hypnotic state several times a day.

It is based on brain & subconscious functions & is non denominational.

    I wish you well.
