Does this sound like a good way to help my step dad stop smoking?

He’s about 50. He’s been smoking since he was 20. He’s tried to quit a lot. He just can’t seem to do it. The whole family wants him to quit but he doesn’t seem to have much motivation. So my grand scheme is.. I’m going to pick up smoking. Let him catch me, and tell him I’ll only quit if he does with me! Brilliant..

    No, bad idea. Smoking kills.
If this man loves his family, notwithstanding the heavy addiction after 30 years of smoking, he should start with the patch and gum. You guys should pitch in and buy his first kit.

But remember, it is a very hard addictioin to beat, he may fail many times before it works.

One way to support him in his endeavor is to say you will work out with him, go run with him, as you know when one quits smoking, one tends to gain weight and it may be detrimental to his health. (my doctor once told me that he would rather treat me for obesity than cancer or other smoking related mortal illnesses)

Another way of giving him some motivation research the subject, tell him about second and third hand smoke, how it affects everyone around him, how he exposes everyone to the chemicals even though he may be smoking outside.Smoke permeates his clothing and hair and skin, it gets dispersed everywhere on the furniture, in the fabric and the carpet, floor.

I sure you’ll do a good job. Just don’t touch the stuff yourself.Even if you did not inhale, the toxins get into your mucus tissues

I know that you mean well and I applaud you for having such compassion for your step dad. However, quitting smoking is much more than getting past the nicotine cravings. It is a way of life. To a smoker, the cigarette/becomes a part of our enjoyment.
    1. when I envision myself fishing, I imagine myself relaxing in my chair blowing a carefree cloud of smoke into the sky as I forget about my week at work
    2. when I envision myself doing wood work, My mind’s eye sees an ashtray on my work bench.
    3. when I envision myself cutting the grass, guess what I see in my hand
    4. A beer with out a cigarette is like a tree without leaves.

You get the idea? Its really hard. I found that Commit is good. I was able to quit for about a month when I was taking the 4mg. I made the mistake of reducing to the 2mg to quickly and started using supplemetal cigarette. I will be trying again soon.

Be patient with your dad. Don’t nag him too much. That will only stress him out and increase his need for nicotine. Maybe you could buy him some commit for a present. However, remember, although we know it’s bad for us, we still enjoy doing it and that is why it is so hard to stop. I will say a prayer for him.

What a stupid idea of starting smoking to force someone to stop smoking. What happen if you got hooked onto smoking yourself. You don’t jump into the fire to save someone in the fire!
