What exactly do your lungs go through when you quit smoking?

I have recently quit smoking. (I smoked heavily for 11 yrs.) It’s been about a week, and I can NOT stop coughing. I assume my lungs are just healing from the previous smoking. How long does this horrible coughing last?

    i have just quit after smoking for 24 years, I’m on my seventh week and still suffering but only cough a couple of times a day, although the invisible person keeps poking me..

    It will get better, Your Body is getting rid of the Crap you put in for so long.I quit 16 Years ago and it wasn’t easy.Stick with it…it’s worth it.Good Luck.
