What can I do to help my dad quit smoking?

He’s also 60 years old now and he’s been smoking since he was 23. I heard there was some kind of gum with nicotine in it? Would it make my dad addicted to gum instead of the cigarette? Has anyone tried it?

Smoking quit aids gently take you away from nicotine by slowly decreasing the amount of nicotine each week/period. By the time the program ends, you are on such a small amount of it that you don’t notice it when it’s gone. I’m not sure how effective it is, but they wouldn’t be selling them if nobody tried. You can give your dad encouragement by telling him the facts, that you are actually being endangered by his smoking, etc.

throw it away and tell him you want him here 50 years from now, And no tobacco turn you gums black and put a hole in you mouth !!!

If he is interested in quitting, perhaps he could try Valerian Root.

Unless your dad WANTS to stop smoking, there’s nothing you can do. He needs to be motivated to quit if he’s at all likely to be successful.

If he does want to do it, let him choose the quit-smoking aid (gum, patch, pill) that he and his doctor will be most effective since everyone is different. Then what you can do is simply provide encouragement and support.
