If you are truly determined you will be fine. For me, I tried the patch and it helped for a while but I started smoking again. At some point I got to where I kept thinking of the smoke that was going into my lungs and how bad it was for me. I decided to quit cold turkey. At first it was tough because I used to always smoke when I was driving for example, but after a few weeks it got a lot easier. It has been years since I have smoked a cigarette and I would never do it again. If you commit to quitting you will be successful. Just realize that it might be tough for a while but if you stay focused it will be worth it in the end, and you will be proud of yourself. Good luck, you can do it.

Hi, I am a 4th yr pharmacy student and my biggest piece of advice to you is that if you have been smoking regularly for over 6 months, don’t quit cold tukey, use something like a patch or gum etc.
It takes the average smoker 8 quit attempts to actually quit, but your chance of quitting doubles wih the patch. talk to your doctor or pharmacist and they will advise you about your best options.

I also have answered this type of question for someone before, and I included some behavioral changes. I am posting the link:

Good luck regardless of what you decide

just wait ten minutes before having one whenever you get the urge. when ten minutes are up tell yourself that you would have been done with your cigarette and you made it through not having one. once i quit smoking i could smell it on other smokers more and it was gross. i would think of that smell and tell myself that i did not want to smell like that.

If you can afford it at all then my suggestion is to not do it cold turkey. Take whatever assitance that you can. I smoked from the age of 14 until the age of almost 40. I had tried quitting cold turkey twice and didn’t even like being around myself. At 30 I tried the patch and wasn’t quite able to quit. I started taking Chantix a week before I quit smoking, and smoked during that week. I smoked fewer cigarettes and craved less. More time would pass between cigarette breaks. I got rid of my cigarettes, lighters, and ash trays, washed my car out, and haven’t smoked since. That was two years ago on January 21 and one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. You have to change your whole lifestyle, including your routine every day. I wish you lots of luck!

    hi Jessica

those desires to smoke are called cravings.. people in support groups have some tools to deal with them.. one of my favorites is known as the 5d’s

Distract (do something else) for instance its hard to smoke doing dishes

Delay (i don’t need one right now).. continued delays = a quit!!

Discuss you did that by asking the question, people in support groups do it in meetings or e-mails

Drink Water, it helps reduce cravings, and flushes toxins

Deep breathe, most smokers only breathe deeply when inhaling!!

the good news is that i now have been quit for over 5 years.. i quit trying to quit alone, and joined a support group.. i attend nicotine anonymous meetings both locally and on line.. on line voice meetings are he as close as your computer, and you can attend while still smoking, before actually attempting a quit.. however you decide to quit good luck, there is simply no wrong way to quit!!

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.

    Hi, hon –

The two tips that really helped my boyfriend quit were these:

    1. Take a deep, slow breath. When you smoke your body learns to associate a cigarette with a deep breath — so sometimes when you crave a cigarette, all you really need is a deep breath.

    2. Oral fixation: you have to put something in your mouth! My boyfriend chewed on pen caps. That’s kind of disgusting. I recommend lollipops instead.

Quitting cold turkey is touch but I’ve read that something like 83% of people who quit with a nicotine replacement like a patch, or gum, or an electric cigarette, fail. So skip nicotine replacement.

    Good luck, hon!
