I quit smoking for 5 years about 8 years ago, the last 3 years Ive been smoking off and on.?

I have heard that starting and stopping often can be worse then if you never quit..So just looking for some feedback. I smoke usually out of depression, it helps. Im getting ready to stop smoking again and I hope for the last time.

Each year about 46% of smokers in the US try to quit, with around 10% of them being successful in the short term1. The longer-term success rate for stopping smoking without anything to help is only about 5%. Smoking cessation medicines increase the success rate and reduce the withdrawal feelings including cravings.
Get some help, you can do it.

A friend is finding the second time around fairly painless. Her doctor has given her Champix, which can have side effects, but so far, touch wood, she has none.

My girlfriend was such as horrible smoker. I mean she smoked like a chimney. I was the complete opposite I had quit 2 years prior. I tried to get her to quit cold turkey like I did, but she couldn’t do it. I guess not everyone can pull it off. I just really had to quit, cause of my line of work.

We tried the patch and that didn’t work and then we tried the gum. She really liked that and kinda got addicted to the gum, lol. Then we found this great program that really did help us. I mean she was off of it, I thought she was gonna relapse but she hasn’t smoked in 3years so, I guess it works.

Nicotine is a natural antidepressant. If you have a problem with depression, you may want to consider taking Zyban/Wellbutrin, which is both a stop smoking med and an antidepressant that works much as nicotine does (dopamine reuptake inhibitor). It may give you what you’re looking for without the health risk. I’d also consider nicotine replacement therapy, nicotine isn’t harmless but it doesn’t cause lung cancer or emphysema and if the effect of nicotine is important to you it may make sense to accept the risk.
