How did you finally quit smoking?

I’ve tried once. Cold turkey. Lasted 3 weeks. Now I smoke significantly less…but I really want to quit. Just curious to see what people have done that works. Or if it’s a mindset. Or what it is that actually gets people to quit. Any help would be wonderfull. Thanks!

Chantix (a prescription pill), has about a program that takes a
few weeks and works with pleasures centers in the brain.

(personally credit it with drying out this old alki too)

I highly recommend the patch. I am not proud that I was a smoker, but I am so glad that I beat it. You are not supposed to smoke while on the patch because it can make you sick. If you use the patch, don’t smoke while on it, and eventually you will hvae cravings less and less until you no longer need the patch. It took me about 3 months.

I also made sure that I invested time each day in prayer about my willingness to quit, and it helped me to persevere and have the strength to stop. Without that reflection, and without that time with God, I don’t think I would have been able to get through it.

Good luck, and if you ever need to talk, feel free to e-mail me at anytime. God bless.

For me, it was just a matter of getting my mind set. I focused on how expensive it was, how horrible I felt in the morning, etc.

It took more than one try, don’t get me wrong. But it was really just a matter of making a decision and then committing to it. I am really stubborn so that helps. =)

From there, I just had to remind myself that the withdrawl symptoms were temporary, and distracting myself to get thru those 3-4 days. Boredom was my biggest enemy, so I had to stay busy til the worst of it was over.

I also sat and watched a cigarette burn down the filter, just to force myself to confront the power it held over me. That was hard, lol.

keep trying, and don’t stop trying until you are successful!

Oh and if you need more of a push, go visit a respiratory rehab place. Ask to talk to the emphysema patients. This is how my mother died (as well as my gmother) and it will have a profound effect to confront your future. Emphysema is an UGLY horrific way to die.
