How can I use my study/practice of zen to quit smoking?

I’ve been studying Zen and practicing meditating a lot for the past few weeks, and it’s really been helping a lot! I notice I am a lot calmer, less stressed out, and have a lot more control over my thoughts and actions, but I still am having trouble saying no when people ask if I want a cigarette! How can I use my study of zen and my practice of it to quit, once and for good?

I dunno but if you figure it out please lemme know, ive been a slave to beer & cigarettes for far too long, yet I kinda enjoy it….

I quit for 7 months last year, and I didn’t take any nicorette gum, or pills, or anything like that, I just decided to stop. So maybe that’s all we need to do… just wake up one day and say “No, i’m not gonna smoke”…

I’ll add that I’m a bit of a suicidal person at times, I don’t get along with this life, so I tend to keep smoking and drinking in hopes that it will kill me some day. You don’t need to be like that though…. just get up one day and fight that urge to smoke… one thing I found that works well is water… if you find that you want a cigarette, take a shower or go swimming… you can’t smoke while under water.

There are some institutes for rehabilitation.. But if you cant afford them because of money or the stigma (if there is any) then you can continue you Zen thing.. Whatever helps you know… Strong will power is a must in any method though. Good luck my friend. I hope you become an inspiration to others like you…

It’s good to keep you calm but to quit you have to have a disciplined will.

Go through a dry run… have a pack of cigarretes and when people ask you if you want one say no. The security of knowing you can have one makes it easier not to smoke one. After a week discard the pack..

Quit drinking after 30+ years…. by my will, I just quit.

One of the aims of Zen is to stop desire from ruling your life. “All is clouded by desire”. You desire cigarettes. When you don’t get them, you’re not as happy as you should be. This is the challenge. Stop allowing the fact of whether or NOT you have a cigarette to influence your happiness, peace and state of mind. Be stronger than the nicotine.

All fun and good to do but the only way you will do it is if you look at it as a climber
    .
Looking at the 500 foot high wall of rock staigtht up with no ledges to stop on
    .
And every one said you are are chicken sch-it to try and climb it
    .
Then you look back at them and hate each one of them with a passion and say back
    .
    You watch sucker you watch
And get all your gear on and look back at them and say
    Eat This
    .
And start the climb of a life
    .
Use this idea on how to stop smoking and you will do it
You just watch me I can do it sucker
    Eat This
    .
No more puffs for me sucker no more for me
    .

look if you want to quit smoking then simply quit. there is no zen about it. just quit. do not let anyone tell you that you can’t just quit. my father smoked for over 40 years. at the end he smoked 5 packs a day. one day he said i quit. i do not want to smoke any more. he never lit another cigarette ever again.
if you WANT (truly want) to quit you will. if you would like to you never will no matter what you do. you must truly want to quit or you wont.

As if. Grow a set and quit. Its not hard, just make a decision.

I’m hoping the following passage helps. From page #140 in the of the online Zhuan Falun Lecture :
“See yourself as a cultivator, and treat it as an attachment today and try to quit, see if you can quit. If you really want to cultivate I urge you to quit smoking today, and I guarantee you can quit. In the field of this class nobody thinks of smoking. If you want to quit, I guarantee you can quit, and when you next pick up a cigarette it won’t taste right. Reading this talk in the book has the same effect.”

There is some interesting discussion about Zen BuddhismIn in the section titled, “Different Levels Have Different Laws” in the Lecture as well.

Not relating to Buddhism, Falun Gong is a unique Buddhist Schools. Falun Gong is based upon the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. Falun Gong consists of five sets of powerful exercises.

Falun Gong, Tibetans, other Buddhists, and Christians have been persecuted in China. The most offensive human right violation is the organ harvesting from the Falun Gong practitioners in China. Can you kindly sign a petition to stop persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China, please ?
