Make up your mind not to smoke again and stick to it.
I stuck to that for 55 years.
the key to quitting smoking is trying as hard as you can not to put a cigarette in your hand
I’ve never smoked, but I’ve known one person to quit without never picking up a cigarette again. My dad.
The trick is to find the part of your personality that’s stronger than the addiction.
For my old man, it was his stubborn streak. He and my mother talked about quitting, and at the time he smoked about twice as much as my mother (about two packs a day). She laughed at him and said “You? Quit? Hahaha — never!”
That day he put it down, and never picked it back up again.
My dad would eat a sack of salt just to prove he could do it. F#$%ing horrible personality to live with, but sure as hell worked when it came to quitting.
I guess he felt the desire to smoke was less than his desire to make a point. Perhaps you could find a similar aspect of yourself, and apply that determination to quitting.
I’d say good luck, but it doesn’t really come down to that. Just decide not to be a slave anymore, and go win back some of your self-respect by making a decision not to suck on that disgusting sh*t anymore.
It’s not like it’s even real tobacco… it’s just immitation tobacco-flavoured paper. Why would you do it?
(post again with your progress, I’ll be sending you positive vibes)
I began smoking at the age of 15 and finally quit for good at the age of 57 (a year ago), when I was at a pack a day. Even tho’ all the experts say you have to go cold turkey, I think that just increases the craving. This is how I did it. Every time I wanted a cigarette, I only smoked half of it. So, I immediately cut my intake in half. After a few weeks of doing that (gives your body time to adjust to less nicotine), I would only take about 4 puffs, put it out and save it for the next craving. After a few weeks of that, I went to 2 puffs, then one puff (where one cigarette could last me a day or two). My body gradually got used to doing without the nicotine and I got to a point where I said, “when this pack is done, I’m not buying anymore”. That was a year ago. Recently, I stayed with my son, who smokes, and took a drag off his cigarette. I didn’t like the taste and it hurt my throat. If I can do it, you can do it, because I loved smoking!!!
I got bronchitis twice (really bad) — so bad I had to sleep sitting up for weeks. Even after that I had serious cigarette cravings. Here’s what I did: I told all my friends I was quitting. I threw out all my cigarettes. I took a Bic pen and took the filler out so I could use the tube of the pen as a fake cigarette. I drank lots of coffee. I also told myself I was going to save all my cigarette money and spend it on a treat for myself.
Take a deep, slow breath every time you feel the urge. Believe me — it helps!
You may want to try a new but successful smoking cessation product called Chantix which is currently the frontrunner and proven way to quit smoking. Even though there is a side effect of increased suicidal tendencies, it can be overcome by simply cutting the daily dosage by half. It’s one of many smoke cessation programs which has a substantial track record of success.
Good luck!
