Does the Electronic Cigarette help quit smoking?

Hi, both of my parents are heavy smokers and i’ve tried to help them quit but they always go back to the nasty habits of smoking. I’ve heard about the electronic cigarette and I wanted to know if I bought one for my parents would it help the quit. Even if it doesn’t help them quit is it better for them to just smoke using the electric cigarette rather than an actual one?

Just tell them if they don’t quit smoking, you are going to start. Even light up a smoke in front of them all serious like and then they should want to quit.

The best and easiest way to give up smoking is with nicotine replacement gum or patches.
Here in NZ the government actually subsidizes the purchase of them for – I think it is three months or maybe it is 6 weeks so they only cost about $5. But no matter what the price is for them, in the long run it saves money because you aren’t buying cigarettes after that. They really work. I know heaps of people who have quit using them including myself.
I don’t think anything like electronic cigarettes will work.
But nothing works unless the person really wants to give up. Like any addiction they themselves have to want to do it.

It’s not the nicotine that kills you, it’s the smoke. So yes, if they have no intent to ever quit, at least try to convince them into the electronic cigarette to get them away from the dangers of tobacco smoke. The real value in the e-cig isn’t for smokers to quit, it’s for them to be healthy whether they quit or not. Like my favorite brand The Safe Cig says, “You don’t have to quit, just quit killing yourself.” Good luck to ya!

Some say that using electronic cigarettes can help you quit smoking.

By switching to ecigs you would certainly quit smoking tobacco cigarettes with tar and 1000s of carcinogens.

To end your addiction to nicotine you have two options with ecigs:
One option is to gradually lower the level of nicotine in your cartridges to become nicotine and tobacco free.
The other option is to smoke electronic cigarettes with zero nicotine cartridges while applying nicotine patches. That way you separate addiction and habit.

    Here is a forum

in which some folks that shared their quitting experience with e-cigarettes.

I’ve been smoking for 30 years. I’ve quit briefly several time over those 30 years. I’ve used many methods that never worked for long, the biggest nightmare being Chantix. Patch, no. Gum, no. Meds, no. Cold turkey, no. I bought an electronic cigarette in September 2009 and started using it on my youngest daughter’s birthday. I gave that to her for her birthday. Plus toys too :-) . I haven’t smoked since. Don’t crave cigarettes at all. Never want another cigarette. This has been the easiest quit I have ever had! I was a 2 pack a day smoker!

The problem with the electronic cigarette is that it is not a stable product. If your parents aren’t willing to quit by themselves then they won’t, no matter what you do.

I think 50% of it for me is the action of smoking..the physical action of smoking and the other half was the actual nicotine. I quit after 5 years of smoking and my mother in law after 30 years with e-cigarettes.

To answer the safety question…common logic suggest they are MUCH MUCH safer than traditional cigarettes. 4000 chemicals vs a few and no tar, smoke or carcinogens. There hasnt been many studies done yet so most companies dont make health claims due to FDA regulations. THey are also much cheaper in the long run vs treaditional cigarettes.

I tried a few different brands before I found one that I like with the ProSmoke electronic cigarette. Their site is http://www.ProSmokeStore.com. Not spam, just offering you a choice since I had to buya few brands before I found one that tastes great and produced the same amount of vapor or more than a real cigarette. No reason to switch if it doesnt feel the same right?!!?

They also dont charge you every month for refills like other companies, you buy them as you need.

    Good luck!

check out http://www.21centurysmoking.com! there are so many benefits to using an e-cig…maybe if you toss a few of them towards your folks they’ll give it a shot. my husband has actually cut down on how much he smokes because now he can take a quick drag whenever he wants – to smoke a cigarette he had to go outside and with all the effort and standing in the cold, he would just smoke the whole thing. 21 century smoking has different flavors and strengths – i’m sure they have what your parents are smoking. if you remind your parents that they will be saving money, helping their health, helping the environment, won’t be at risk for starting a fire, etc. then they might be willing to try. 21 century smoking offers a refund in case you/they try it and don’t like it. i hope they give it a shot for their sake (and yours). :)

The electronic cigarette provides an interesting cross between a more health wise alternative to smoking (smoke) and an actual aid to quit smoking. With the e-smoke you have options to use varying concentrations of nicotine for the simulated smoking experience or no nicotine. The problem of cigarette addiction and habit is just that, a combination of addiction and associated habit that can make the layers of motivating factors difficult to break. The e-smoke bridges this gap of associated habit and the actual addiction to nicotine. I think the e-smoke is ultimately a worthy choice to investigate, I would rather inhale vapor with nicotine than the burning smoke loaded with tar and carcinogens.

I smoked a little more than a carton of Marlboros a week for 25 years until I tried an electronic cigarette. After my first two puffs, I said to my wife, “I could smoke this!” I bought an electronic cigarette, finished up the pack I was on (I wasn’t going to throw them away … they are expensive!) and have been tobacco cigarette-free for nearly seven months now.

I had tried to quit using the patch and nicorette but neither helped. This was a breeze!

What made the switch easy was that it felt like smoking and I was getting my nicotine fix. I initially started with the very high nicotine (24mg) and have now gotten myself down to the low (11mg) nicotine juices. I don’t know if I’m ready for zero but I may buy a zero bottle of e-liquid and mix it with an 11mg bottle, creating a 5 1/2 mg mixture next.

An important note: Electronic cigarettes are not marketed as “stop smoking” devices for legal reasons. There are literally millions of us out here that have made the switch and that number is doubling every four months. The only way to know for sure is to give them a try. They aren’t exactly the same as a regular cigarette but it was close enough for me.

A final note: I had pretty much given up on the concept of quitting smoking until my doctor mentioned electronic cigarettes and gave me a guy’s card who sold them. He ripped me off for $100 for an electronic cigarette but at least the model he provided was one of the best out there (it was a Joye 510, also called a Titan, Dura, Janty, Yenti and Pilot). I used to cough up all kinds of disgusting crud every morning and that stopped within a week of switching to the electronic cigarette. I can’t remember the last time I coughed.

There are all kinds of e-cigarette forums out there that provide reviews of the various electronic cigarette models. There are some hard core e-cigarette smokers using some pretty wild contraptions (one called “the screwdriver” comes to mind) but the consensus is that the Joye 510 is the best value e-cigarette out there – especially for beginners. You will see that the DSE901 comes in a close second to the Joye 510. I own both and can’t decide which is better. They are clearly the best of the five models I have tried, though.

For the unasked question, those models tend to range in price from $41-$69, depending on the site you go to. I always buy my stuff from http://electriccigarettestop.com – you can pick up starter kits for either model for under $45 including free shipping. About a week or so ago, they added a special combo package deal for two smokers that I think may be just what you are looking for. You should check it out.

Well Electronic cigarettes is not a way to quit smoking. It is simply a healthy replacement of the traditional way of smoking. It’s not only healthy, it saves money. With traditional cigarettes, the smoker is forced to inhale thousands of unwanted chemicals and carcinogens along with the nicotine. E-cigarette contains only the nicotine you want, nothing you don’t want. It costs a whole lot less than traditional cigarettes and does not have any odor. It leaves no odor behind on your breath, hands, or clothes, does not cause any second hand smoke, can be smoked anywhere – even in No Smoking Areas… and is by far cleaner for the environment.

The electronic cigarette will only help your parents quit if they truly want to. It’s just like exercise…we know we should do it, but how many people actively pursue it.

The reason smoking is hard to quit is because of two things:
    1. Nicotine
    2. Physical and Social behavior patterns

The electronic cigarette is intended to break both of those.
    1. Nicotine: With regular cigarettes, your parents can choose to stop smoking regular strength, switch to light and then ultra-lights. Unfortunately, in regular (or analogue) cigarettes there is no option for a No nicotine cigarette.

With Electronic cigarettes you can also slowly step down the nicotine addiction by gradually decreasing the strength of the e-liquid nicotine in the electronic cigarette. One company, http://www.e-cigarettedirect.com, even has a “Nicotine Withdrawal Program” that has all the components of this step down method, including No Nicotine E-Liquid. (E-liquid is used to refill the electronic cigarette cartridges).

So, in a manner of 3-6 months, if willing, your parents can choose to decrease their addiction of nicotine, while still maintaining the physical and social habit of smoking, but they are doing it with an electronic cigarette.

    2. Behavior & Social Aspect. This is probably the hardest to overcome, but when your parents step down their nicotine habit (especially with e-cigs), they will feel so much better! E-Cigarettes do not have a smell, there is no burning, no tar, no carcinogens, etc. After getting used to the e-cigarette, your parents will notice the nasty smell of a regular cigarette so much more, in fact they may even dislike the taste of a regular cigarette. Eventually the physical habit breaks.

I think the whole thing boils down to this: Is quitting smoking (or as I like to say, getting rid of the nicotine addiction) really what they want OR do they think they ‘should’ but don’t really want to?
Depends on their answer and motivations.

The least you can ask them to do is to not smoke around you or in the home. Better yet, if they need to, switch from regular cigarettes to electronic cigarettes in the home and around other non smokers.
