I hate bragging but it’s very easy for me to quit smoking or drinking. Usually I just forget that I do them, I don’t even finish the pack or anything just leave it in my coat or cubbard. Sometimes I go for months like this; and if I visit family once or twice a year that’s when smoking becomes mandatory. For the stress.
Drink lots of cold water seems to help offset your new appetite.
You have the ability to decide to quit and not to doubt. Visualize yourself being a non-smoker and decide to quit and do it…
John10:30 I and [my] Father are one.
10:34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
10:35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken.
Mark 11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Here’s a list I compiled once when I needed to overcome an addiction…
You have been bought with a price–use your body to glorify God (ICor.6:19, 20)
lay aside every weight (Hebrews 12:1-2)
ICorithians 10:31 Therefore, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God”
…receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Where? at God’s throne…Heb. 4:16
Clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. (Romans 13:14)
Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (ICor. 10:5b)
ICor. 9:27… I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
Here are some practical tips for changing your habits:
1) Do not drink coffee of caffeinated beverages. There is a connection between caffeine and nicotine in which they are co-dependent. Drinking the caffeine will make it tougher to stop smoking…so stop them both together.
2) Replace the habit for coffee/nicotine with the habit of drinking water or juice. Treat yourself to some high-quality juice, or if you can, just drink a lot of water. Water is the best.
3) Put a rubber band on your wrist, and when you find yourself reflexively reaching for that pack of cigs in your pocket (you did throw those away already, right?!), flick the rubber band instead, to remind yourself of how bad smoking is, and say “I love being free from smoking!”
4) Learn more about the harmful effects of smoking, and how quickly these can be reversed when you stop. Knowing how much healthier you will be in your new lifestyle will be a great encouragement to you.
5) If possible, find a “Breathe Free” program nearby and attend it, as it helps many people to go through a program with companions who are in the same circumstance.
6) Trust God to help you. Trust His promises, and claim them for yourself. You can do it!
I am so thrilled that you beleive that His word will help you…He helped me quit smoking, and I know tht He WILL HELP YOU TOO! He took the desire completely away… I thought it was ok to smoke a little because I kinda liked the taste…But then i saw how foul of a habit it can become and how it actually does NOT SATISFY….It tried to steal the TRUE CONTENTMENT that we Have is HIS EVER PRESENT HELP in our time of need ….Whenever you have the urge, know that His Spirit Fills ALL of heaven and all of Earth and still he cannot be contained…yet He desires to dwell in your very Body…and Because His Spirit IS WITH YOU He will satisfy your Spirit, Soul and Body…
So for a verse that is pertinent to your needs dear one perhaps this:
Psalms 46:1 To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah (Sons of Ice), A Song upon Alamoth (Girl’s Voice–Soprano). God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Know, dear one, that God IS OUR Refuge, and He will Strengthen you to put down those unecessary things, and He is NOT just a help….He is YOUR VERY PRESENT HELP in trouble….The Hebrew word for trouble here is “Tsarah” meaning; tightness – adversary, adversity, affliction, anguish, distress, tribulation, trouble.
To me smoking was causing an unhealthy “tightness”, and was an Adversity and affliction, and it was causing anguish because I knew that God desired me to DELIGHT in Him above every other thing….and Now i can enjoy fresh air…and be satisfied always!
Psalms 54:4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
Proverbs 19:23 The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
The fear of the Lord, also is a GREAT HELP and Blessing…It is the AWARENESS of His NEARNESS and that He indeed is OUR Very Present HELP in any sitiuation….Notice that is tends to LIFE and HE that has this WILL ABIDE SATISFIED, and HE will NOT be visited with evil…!!!
You can make Pr.19:23 into a confession of Faith, for your Heavenly Intercessor is standing at the Right Hand of God, EVERLIVING to make intercession for you…
Hebrews 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, CONSIDER the Apostle and High Priest of our PROFESSION (Confession—whatever we say of HIM, He becomes unto us in our Lives!!!), Christ Jesus;
Tell your soul…”I shall abide satisfied….for I have the Fear (Awareness, reverence) of the Lord, and I shall NOT BE VISITED WITH EVIL! or Evil thought and desires”, etc.
The God of all grace be with you dear one!
Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: HE IS A SHIELD unto them that PUT their TRUST IN HIM.!
Luke 1:37: “For with God nothing shall be impossible.”
Mark 11:22: “And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.”
Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”
Proverbs 9:10-11: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.”
I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me
Revelation 14:11–”And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever…”
I agree with Liberal asskicker. The bible isn’t going to help you quit, just do it. You are the only one who can help yourself with this.
