can you have a miscarriage if you quit smoking when you find out your pregnant?

When I found out I was pregnant i was 4W4D prego. I stopped smoking immediatly. A week later i had bleeding which subsided and the baby was still okay. Then at 9 weeks I had more bleeding and i lost the baby. could it be because i quit cold turkey? Alot of people say its good to gradualy quit, and i shouldn’t have quit cold turkey, but thats what the doctor told me to do. I was smoking close to 1 pack a day for about 4 years. help plz!?!

There’s absolutely no way to know what caused your miscarriage. I’m sorry for your loss.

Theres no way of knowing. Most all miscarriages happen because the baby wasnt healthy and wouldn’t have survived the pregnancy or birth. Thats what I was told when I had mine.

Smoking or not smoking did not cause your miscarriage. Most likely there was just a problem with the baby. Don’t beat yourself up over this, you didn’t cause it to happen. If you are planning to conceive in the next year I would avoid smoking so you don’t have to worry about quitting again.

No honey, sometimes it just wasn’t the right time, I am very sorry to here, that but sometimes are body’s just aren’t ready yet but don’t think it was your fault, you should be proud that you stopped smoking becasue you were pregnant. A lot of woman smoke through there whole 9 months without any care in the world which is really sad……..

I really doubt that’s what caused it. Miscarriages are actually more common than you’d think, but people don’t talk about them much. I had one at 6 weeks and have never smoked in my life and am in generally good health. I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it, most likely there was something wrong when the baby initially formed or implanted where it would not have carried to term no matter what you did. Quitting smoking was the best thing for your baby and the best thing for you. Stay off the cigarettes so you’ll be healthy and smoke-free when you get pregnant again.

first, i am sorry for your loss.

about 15-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, and the reason is not known. most doctors believe it is due to a malformation or defect occurring during conception that does not allow the fetus to grow properly, so the body self-aborts. it was likely nothing you did or did not do that caused this to happen, and i would say that quitting smoking was not a factor in it. there is no way to know for sure, but it is unlikely.

there really is no way of knowing but i have heard that if you are a smoker you are not supposed to just quit all of a sudden…but that in no way makes it your fault…..im really sorry about what you went through.

there really is no way of knowing. I smoked soo much before I found out I was pregnant, and quit when I was 10 weeks, and my baby is fine. So i’m not sure.
But i’m very sorry about your loss hun, xoxo

There are many reasons for having a miscarriage, quitting smoking is not one of them. I don’t know why someone would tell you stop gradually, nobody tells a mom-to-be to cut back gradually when she drinks

  • AlysrianXian says:

The stress of quitting smoking “MAY” have caused your miscarriage, but there is truthfully no way of knowing for sure.

I am so sorry for your loss, losing a baby is the worst thing the world.
