What’s the best method to stop smoking?
I’ve smoked a little less than a pack a day for the past 10 yrs, and I’m ready to quit. I would like to know the best method other’s have tried and has worked for them. I’ve tried the patch, but have had doctors tell me that’s for those who are heavy smokers (ie 2+ packs a day) and are not geared to the pack-a-day smoker. Plus I found being on the patch made me nuerotic…couldn’t sleep, had bad dreams, etc. The doctors told me that was because my body wasn’t used to that much nicotine being pumped thru my system. I’m not a gum chewer, gum gives me a headache. I don’t like suckers and candy. Cold turkey is rough. I’ve thought about hypnosis, but don’t know how effective it is. Has anyone had success w/ any of these or other things?

make a whole in ur throat…
Cold Turkey and lots and lots of gum.
Quitting
cold turkey baby yea
Three heart attacks stopped me
cut your hands off
The best way to stop doing anything and be cured from all sicknesses is to die.
Stop buying cigarettes. There’s no easy way to break an addiction. It takes an incredible amount of will power. Good luck to you.
drink a lot of alcohol
just stop SMOKIN’
go to a doctor and have them tell you that if you don’t stop now you will die in less than 1 week.
i dunno, but if you find one let me know!!! i think the best bet will be pure and simple, old fashioned will power!
Look into a mirror and say
“I can stop smoking” many times.
The study showed it works for real.
believe it
goto a jail cell and stay there for 3 months. no outsite. total isolation!
As much as Gas is Now i Wouldnt Recommened anyone to Smoke… That alone will make anyone Stop LOL
i quit with the help of some gum and then had to quit the gum too. you can try hypnosis which is excellent or just use will power which is hard. too bad smoking is not unaddictive like they claim it to be. also, read up on smoking facts, that scared me to quit. i would try hypnosis first. they can get you to feel that each time you pick up a cigareete you were putting a piece of cat poop to your lips. that itself is a real deterrent. chewing gum also helps as well. i chewed a lot of cinnamon gum. now i dont even think of having one. i smoked for 13 years. about a pack a day.
Nicotine gum worked well for me.You park it between your cheek and your gums. You only chew it when you want to reactivate it.If you don’t smoke a lot,it is better than the patch.
I used the generic of zyban and it worked wonderful. I have not had a cigarette in 2 1/2 years! I started taking the pills and they almost seemed to make me “forget” to smoke at those habit smoking times. Like getting into the car, after eating, etc. I stopped smoking 7 days after I started taking the pills. I also smoked about a pack a day for around 10 years.
the best way is to do something else that can stop you from smoking such as when you feel like smoking, eat somthing or play a game or go outside.
Replace your smoking habit with another habit. For example gum smacking. It may get on people’s nerves but not as much as having to constantly fan away smoke from a cigarette.
I’ve heard a lot of people had problems with the patch. Someone told me it made them want to smoke MORE.
I did cold turkey in 1991. It SUCKED, but it worked. If you can get thru the first two weeks, it’s downhill from there. The first two weeks were the worst.
I know of people who used diversion techniques. They did things like chew gum or take up a hobby to keep their hands busy and themselves distracted.
Good luck!!
Cold turkey works, everything else doesn’t. You have to want to quit for a reason. Mine was that I was sick of coughing and not being able to breathe right. Once you tell yourself you want to breathe, quit and don’t look back. Ever. Not even one.
BEST WAY: STOP, don’t hold a ciggarette and don’t light up. It’s really not hard. It’s ALL WILL POWER, that’s how I quit. NO DOCTORS, NO PATCHES, NO BOOKS, NO WHATEVER….I SIMPLY TOLD MYSELF I’M DONE. The only way you can quit is if you REALLY want to quit. If you really want to quit, then there is no problem quitting cold turkey.
too be honest I bet you the best thing to do is get addicted to something else…how about excercising? when you feel like smokin go run or do some sit ups or push ups and just get through… the only way to get over it is to fight through it isnt going to be easy…actually what work for me was me smoking marijuana…. if u do that u wont like the taste of cigs ne more…u might start in marijuana, but its better than smokin cigs…or when in doubt just stop cold turkey like everyone else is saying…suck it up and do it…
I am extremely against smoking, and firstly im pleased to hear you have finally decided to give up!
Now, to get you off them. To be honest, if all the patches and gum wont work, the best thing is Cold Turkey. Not only does it get you off it completely (if you stick to it) it also proves you have a strong will to give up.
How to go about doing it is a little complicated at first. You have to choose a day which isnt your normal routine. For example, if you go to work most days, then dont decide to quit on a workday. The reason for this is because you most likely have gotten into a pattern of when you smoke, so if you try give up on a routine day, it will be even harder. Do something different the day you decide to give up. Go somewhere different, somewhere you have never gone to before. When you get the urge to have a smoke, resist it. It take alot of will power to do so, but you just have to stick it out. It takes about 3 days until your body slowly stops craving, so make sure those three days are all different. Plus, reward yourself after everyday, and dont if you have a smoke.
Good luck with giving up, I hope if goes well.
its about will power and replacing the smoking addiction with another “good addiction” –
for example –
- research
- work
- hobby
- thought process
- something that gets you energized…and makes you forget about going for the next cig
- There is no easy answer.
- Its a psychological battle. patches etc won’t help.
- will power will
- you have to think different. look at it differently. get your mind “hooked” unto something better/good in life.
- try baby steps….1 less cig a day….and continue reducing further
hey….i have a personality disorder (paranoid personality disorder).
improving one’s personality — i guess — probably requires the same amount, or many times more, of will power, as to give up an addiction such as smoking.
i want to be the way i am. its not easy to change my personality. however i am committed to working to improve my personality. i have made small progress.
i am doing it in baby steps. you can too.
we all love to do things the way they are. it takes lot of will power to change a habit/personality and be able to enjoy a “different you”.
actually want to stop smoking. and good to like every store that u buy smokes from and tell them not to let u buy smokes. I’m not really sure if that would work though.or gum.of course it gives u headaches.too bad.
Reduce smoking one stick less daily. I am sure you will be
able to stop smoking.
Look everything you have tried is effective. How determined are you. You need will power more than anything. You have to want better health and longer life, and it should be easy. My father was a pack a day smoker since I was a child. When I was 15 he came home from a doctors appointment with a huge bag of gum and lollipops and announed he was not smoking anymore. He NEVER told us what the doctor say to scare him but he went cold turkey THAT day and its been over 20 days. You should rely on props or things….get your mind right, be strong and just QUIT!!!!
I would suggest cold turkey. Find ways to distract yourself so you spend less time thinking about smoking. Keep your hands busy so you can’t hold a cigarette in them. Maybe brush your teeth more often if the minty fresh taste keeps you from smoking. If you just can’t handle it on your own, talk to your doctor. Maybe a prescription like Zyban would help.
I’ve recently quit smoking and have not had one since 3/30/06. I quit cold turkey from smoking half a pack or less each day. It’s what works for me.
i have just recently stopped, i smoked about as much as you did a pack of 20 would last me 2 3 days and i had been smoking for 8 years and i just decided one day that i would stop and went cold turkey. no gum or patches, im not going to lie it is hard sometimes but you just have to be strong and power through.
The patches dont do anything its just a mind thing, you think it works then it will, i know some one who just brought plaster and wrote nicotenell on them and her husband quit thinking they were patches.
If you really want help quitting try new leaf service they do free patches and advice.
I’ve heard amazing stories about that laser stuff, but I’m sure it’s a lot of money. My suggestion is to find someone you care deeply for with a habit that is also hazardous to their health and make a deal with them. For example my best friend was turning bulemic. She wouldn’t eat and when she did she would go throw it up. I promised to stop smoking if she would start eating. Habbits are at least 50% mental and if you both draw strength from each other you and your loved one can do it.
That Commit Lozenge worked really well for me, and I was totally against nicotine replacement. I didn’t see how getting your nicotine from a different source would help, but it does. They also tell you to use 9 lozenges a day, for 6 weeks, but once I started, I just didn’t have that many cravings for that long.
They also have a support website that is really helpful (you need a code inside the box to gain access). The most helpful tactic they had (aside from the product itself) was to choose a “quitting buddy.” This should be someone who is also quitting smoking, or who has already quit so they understand what you are going through. Don’t choose a smoker who is not quitting (the temptation makes things harder), and don’t choose someone who has never smoked (nothing more annoying than someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about telling you what to do). They also send pointers to the person you choose so they can learn how to best help you. I’ve been smoke-free for a year, and don’t miss it at all. On the rare occasion I do get a slight craving, chewing gum helps (now. It never did when I was trying to quit). You’ve taken the biggest step and decided that you want to quit–now do something about it!
Readiness to quit with a strong resolution should be the best solution for your problem! Exercising and keeping yourself busy should help too. Try to stay away from tempting places. Try not to thing about the issue of quitting. Try also to add up the money that you were supposed to buy your cigarettes with and decide to use them in something that you really like. Finally, go for jogging and stop smoking. Good luck!!
I struggled with this same problem. But there has been recent research claiming that Cold Turkey quitters have a better chance than the gradual reductionists. The problem you are up against is the fact that the the Tobacco companies have literally spent BILLIONS if not TRILLIONS of dollars engineering nicotine to cross the blood membrane barrier as efficiently as possible making it THE MOST ADDICTIVE SUBSTANCE EVER ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET. Anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves, stupid, or working for the tobacco companies. You have to get mad at these companies, and refuse to be led around by the nose by their engineered death! There is no easy way unfortunately, otherwise everyone would quit SNAP! Just like that. You have to be strong minded! Take control of your actions and body, you have the choice not to light that cigarette. I know its easier said than done, I’ve been there, but I got tough with myself and injected some iron into my spine (not literaly) and refused to ever smoke a cigarette ever again. Don’t surround yourself with smokers, that will make it much harder. Stay away from them if you can help it. Don’t let people smoke near you, ask them if they mind not smoking. But number one, BE STRONG don’t cave to the cravings! I believe in you and know you can do this. If you rely upon cigarettes to make you feel better about yourself, and you are having self-esteem issues, which are the root of a lot of drug addictions, SNAP OUT OF IT!!!! You’re not as bad a person as you think you are. YOU CAN DO THIS!! QUIT NOW!!! LIVE LONGER!!! BREATH DEEPER! Love ya…….
This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed.
I quite smoking 2 years ago
Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.
Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”
The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS
Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.
It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!
Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.
The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….
TO BE FREE!
What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?
The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.
The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.
No Gimmicks!
The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!
The Allen Carr Method is successful because:
It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.
Medical Endorsements
A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health
“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”
Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees
“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”
Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital
“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”
Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong
“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”
Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London
”…I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”
Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP
“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”
Celebrity Endorsements
“His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson
“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins
GOOD LUCK!
