For all of you dog lovers out there, I need help! I think I’ve been unknowingly hurting my adored dog!?

I am trying to remain calm. This is stupid of my part and I admit it. I love my dog more than anything else, but I’ve been heavily smoking inside my home without realizing that I could hurt her. I am a heavy smoker and I live alone with my pets. So it didn’t occur to me to smoke outside, or else I’ll be also hurting my babies. This has been going on for 2 years. I am petrified at the idea of what has already been caused by my behavior. It’s really cold outside and I don’t know how I can stand the icy weather. I wish I could put my pets in the bedroom as I smoke in the living room, but I was told that even then they could still smell the fumes and get sick. Please advise on what is best. I can’t stop smoking (I tried patches and hypnosis and herbal cigarettes…) so please tell me how I can protect my girls without having to quit now.

The best thing for everyone is for you to quit.

You can stop smoking. It is all want to and perseverance. My uncle stopped smoking after years of it and my Granddad stopped the habit in a day! It is possible and the habit is dangerous to your pets. You need to figure out if you love your pets more than your cigarettes.

Animals are susceptible to the same issues that humans are when it comes to second hand smoke (asthma, cancer, etc).

I smoke, and for a time I smoked in my home with my animals present. Now, for their safety (and to keep my home smelling fresh) I smoke outside my apartment on the stairs. I know it’s cold, but that’s really the only way to keep them from inhaling the toxins that cigarettes produce.

Or, you could quit….come to think of it, I could quit too. If you want to give it a shot, and want a quit buddy, I’m up for it.

If you really want to help your dogs you should try quitting again. Its very hard and will take allot of dedication and time on your part but you should try. If not, then you should do all of your smoking away from your pets, even the garage or basement is better then in the room with them. And if you want to know what damage has been done, go to the vet and have there lungs checked. As long as you work on the problem the damage is probably reversible or close to it.
I hope this helps and best of luck with quitting!

Well, the best answer I could give you is quit! smoking is disgusting, and think you can either hurt your babies, and maybe die, then they wouldn’t have anyone, or you could quit and be good again! Just imagine their little faces and how they would walk around all sad because you were gone, or worse, they could get very sick. But just try, if you have a basement? Put them down there until you are done that disgusting habit, if not, then maybe get them a doghouse and have them sit outside, so they can go to the bathroom then get the smoke and fumes as much out of the house as you can before you let them in. Hope you come up with something, hope your doggies are ok!

Sorry but all the studies show that pets suffer the affects of passive smoking just the same as anyone else who breathes the air. Studies have shown an increase in lung cancers of pets of smokers, there are currently no studies (to my knowledge) to differentiate between pets who are in the room when their owner smokes or in different parts of the house. I think human studies have shown that even parents who don’t smoke around their children still increase the risk of their children developing asthma.

There is nothing you can do to change the past but you can quit and ensure that in the future you don’t expose the dogs (or yourself) to toxic fumes.

You can’t really say you have been unknowingly hurting your dog. I don’t know anyone that does not know the effects of smoking and second hand smoke. Unless you maybe live in a cave and have never heard the risks involved with a disgusting habit. If you don’t mind killing yourself, then smoke outside. Don’t make your poor dog suffer because of your habit. By the way, when you die of lung cancer, who will care for your beloved dog?

Basically, what you need is a room or area that has separate circulation from the rest of the house. Other friends of mine have solved this by setting up the garage or an area like a sunroom as a smoking room. Air flow from this room (it should be negative pressure compared to the rest of the house) goes directly outdoors. You can talk to architects, engineers, a really good handyman or ac/heating guy on how to set this up. Then you do not allow non-smokers in this room. Locking them in the bedroom will not do the job, since with most ac/heating systems your whole house shares the same air and your smoke contaminates the whole house. This way they get clean air and you can get a comfortable room.
