Chris asks…
Smoking in the office – Scotland?
My boss has started smoking in the office when she knows that her boss has left the building.
We often have to work late & she lights up & breathes smoke all over us. This even happened when it was obvious that I had a bad cold & was having difficulty breathing. My question is, How do we get her to stop without having to actually mention it to her boss, who incidentally we think already knows?
After all, it is illegal in Scotland & also since we work at the top of a 3 storey building with only a staircase as a way of escape in case of fire. Help! All sensible suggestion appreciated.

Werner Michael answers:
Contact your local Environmental Health Department (Officer) with your local council (I think) and they will act. It is Environmental Health Officers in Scotland that are used to enforce the ban that is in place. If a company gets a visit they will soon ensure noone is smoking as the fines can be hefty as I understand it.
You should be able to remain annonymous in the affair.
I wouldn’t hesitate as the smoker has no concern for your feelings, but far more importantly has no concern for your health and well-being, and life.
