Your Questions About Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

Laura asks…
To Quit smoking cold turkey or not?
I’ve tried quitting smoking cold turkey and it never works. I can’t get past the 3 days withdrawal period and even on the rare occasion that I do temptation strikes and all it takes for a relapse is one puff.
Im thinking of chantix but how does it work. I’ve tried nicotine patches and they don’t work.

Werner Michael answers:
For one thing, smoking a cold turkey seems extremely difficult. Do they come in packs or like do you buy them individually? And is it a whole turkey or just like slices? Do different deli’s have different blends? Is there a light version? I have so many questions. But anyway, I recommend taking it in a 3 step process. First try warm turkey. If your goal is to quit smoking turkey completely however this may not be the best option. Step two. Try switching to a different type of meat product. Ham I hear holds up quite well to the smoking procedure and is a favorite but surprisingly duck is quickly coming on to the scene. Thirdly, as a last ditch effort to quit smoking cold turkey I recommend taking up smoking.

David asks…
How will my body react when I quit smoking cold turkey?
My smoking is pretty bad. I started in 2004 @ age 19 as a social smoker, now I’m hitting 2 packs a day.
When I quit I want to go to sleep for 8-9 hours so that my body will have a head start on getting it out of my system. BUT, I dread how my body will react. Any idea of what it’ll be like?

Werner Michael answers:
It’ll be hard as shit. Good luck, don’t be discouraged. It’s unpleasant, but possible. You’ll feel free afterwards.

Helen asks…
How many of you have quit smoking cold turkey?
without any medicine or any type of device. Just wondering, as I think cold turkey is the best way to stop

Werner Michael answers:
I quit cold turkey and it was extremely easy – 6 years ago now. Having said that, I tried several times before that and it wasn’t easy at all – obviously I failed. It’s all about how you do it…
I’m going to have to disagree with Jesse’s answer. Sure most people fail with cold turkey – as with any other method. Smoking is an addiction, that’s right. And that’s exactly why you shouldn’t gradually reduce your intake. If it was a habit that might work. You could get used to smoking less and less and eventually not at all anymore. But the addiction will never decrease by reducing your intake – you just “enjoy” your cigarettes more because you’re always holding out for it. If you manage to quit after cutting down you will go through exactly the same withdrawals as when you just quit cold turkey…
Stoppo gave a good answer. It’s true – you need to have the right reason or motivation. That’s what made the difference for me as well. If you think you’re going to miss smoking and it’s going to be hard to quit you will have a tough time. But if you know (really!) you’ll be better off without it and you are happy with your decision it can be really easy.
It’s ALL about your mindset. Be glad you don’t have to do that anymore – that you are getting rid of this filthy addiction. Never think you will miss it – that’s what makes it hard. But instead see yourself as happy, content and proud that you’ve done it.
If you prepare yourself properly, you can easily override the withdrawal pangs completely.

Robert asks…
Is it bad to quit smoking cold turkey while you have a severe chest cold?
A doctor told my fiance that right now would not be the best time to quit smoking because he has a bad chest cold. It had something to do with the small hair on the lungs and that id he quits smoking it will make his chest cold worse

Werner Michael answers:
The best time for anyone to stop smoking is right now! But some times are more difficult than others. A cold can help, because it often decereases the desire to smoke.
If your fiance feels like stopping, I would encourage him. If he drinks lots of freshly squeezed orange juice, this will help him to stop smoking and at the same time reduce his chest cold.

Richard asks…
How many people have quit smoking cold turkey and stuck with it?
How long did you smoke?
When did you quit?
What helped you to not smoke again?

Werner Michael answers:
I smoked from 1982 to 2006. I quit several times, the best being 8 months, before relapsing. So, this time, it is for real. I quit Aug 15/06 and am still going strong.
The best thing I have now, to make sure I don’t smoke again is the knowledge that it really is TRUE that I am one smoke away from being a smoker.
Just like being an alcoholic. I can’t smoke just one. So, I KNOW, that if I just have a puff, I’m just around the corner from full blown smoking yet again. So, if I take the puff, I know what I’m saying is that I don’t want to stay quit.
Simple.
I just can’t have a drag, puff, or a butt.
Good luck. Keep trying until you get it done.

William asks…
Found out I was pregnant, so I quit smoking cold turkey, Dr. says thats hard on the baby?
I found out I was preg. so, obviously, I quit smoking right then and there, but now my dr. and everyone else it telling me that it is hard on the baby to quit cold turkey. I dont see how gradually cutting back could be any better for my baby.

Werner Michael answers:
That is bullcrap! I quit cold turkey with the baby I am carrying now, who is doing great, I also quit cold turkey with my youngest who is turning 9 in September. Guess what he thrived and was over 10 pounds never an issue! I weaned myself slowly with my oldest son who battled chronic ear infections and asthma so nobody is going to tell me that quitting cold turkey is too stressful on the baby!!!! It is so much better to stop early then later!
GOOD FOR YOU!!! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!!!
