Werner Michael answers:

Honestly with my son, I smoked. I quit about a month and a half before he was due and everything turned out fine and didnt show anything.
I would just drink lots of water as well.

Donald asks…

how did you stop drinking and smoking when you were pregnant?

so i just found out i’m pregnant and i’m a very very very heavy drinker and smoker.
what to do what to do.
i know i have to stop i just need help.

Werner Michael answers:

My Dr. Told me not to quit smoking. Quitting causes stress and will harm the
baby. So I cut back to 5-7 a day. The result. 3 pregnancies, 3 big
and healthy babies. All because I listened to my Dr. His advice
benefited my children.

Linda asks…

Fiance smoking – pregnant – opinions?

I stopped the moment I found out I was pregnant – which yes, I know I entirely should have and it is much more important for the mother to stop than the father.

He does pretty good at keeping the smoke away from me. Sometimes he doesnt realize I am around and I get on to him about it and he apologizes and gets away.

I have begged and begged him to stop smoking asap. I finally just said (when I was almost 4 months pregnant) you know what – smoke all you want now but promise me when baby comes you will be done – that was in 6 months. Now baby will be here in 4 months and he is smoking more than ever!

I know that he wont smoke around the baby but that isnt the point. The smell – all over his face and hands, in his clothes – I dont want my newborn breathing that! Our OB AND my fiances cousin who is also a dr both told us that it is crucial to our childs health when it is born to not smoke around him, keep the smell of smoke on his body away from him that even that could cause asthma and respitory problems.

Now when I ask him (which is rare these days bc I get so frustrated) if he is going to quit by the time baby comes he just gets irritated like I am asking for too much and says now that he doesnt even know if he will have quit by then. He will have had almost a year by the time baby gets here. I was a smoker just like him when we got pregnant – I stopped bc I had to, bc I wanted to be a good parent to my child in utero, and until the baby is walking and doesnt require AS MUCH help – I still wont smoke. But I guess I am willing to make more sacrifices than him. Not to mention that we were trying for a child and he said as soon as we got pregnant that he would quit – he fell back on that promise too, obviously.

Do I have a right to be mad? He says that you cant force someone (which I know is true) but I forced myself to and he can too. He says you have to ready to quit (his mom tells me the same thing) and I understand that, but I wasnt ready to quit when we got pregnant -but I knew I needed too… I just feel lied to and hurt through this issue..

Werner Michael answers:

Second hand smoke is just as bad as smoking wiht a cigarette. You have a right to be furious at him. Tell him that smoking near you, no matter how far away he tries to be, can harm your baby and may lead to serious medical conditions. Second hand smoke can be very harmful to you and your baby. Ask him to stop immediately for him, you, and your baby. I am no doctor, haha, but I have had D.A.R.E. In school.

P.S.
Hope your baby is happy and heathy!! Best wishes!!

Nancy asks…

MY Friend is pregnant and she wont stop smoking?

I keep telling her to stop and she keep saying it too hard see i understand the habbit but i told her it can put her baby in danger and she dont care, because she has 1 daughter and she said when she was pregnant with her she quited, and now since this baby is by another man she stop caring and the first baby daddy dont know that she is pregnant by someone else, she smokes all the time, please help me so i can help her thanks to all of you.

Werner Michael answers:

Two outcomes are possible either you have to let her know she opened her legs to this man. Why is she going to risk having a baby that is going to have problems. Make her see that it will cost her more in the long run. For example say: you know its clinically proven that mothers who smoke look at my quote,”Babies born with low birth weights require more medical care, have more health problems, and are more likely to die in infancy than are babies of normal or higher birth weights (2). White mothers who smoke during pregnancy are nearly twice as likely to have a low birth weight baby, and nonwhite mothers are almost 60% more likely than are mothers who do not smoke. Reducing the percentage of babies born at low birth weights has been a relatively intractable public health problem.” Let her know since probably she has money problems already, let her know that she doesn’t want to be spending more money on keeping her low-birthweight child in the hospital in a plastic container because she’ll kick herself in the ass the whole time becuase it was her own fault. The other option is you try and she does not care and this will lead to possibly what I explained and worse yet, the baby may not survive and she will remember this for the rest of her life. If she’s already messed up. Help her fix her own problems first. Then she can care for another human being. If you’re religious or not, pray for her. That her heart will be softened. You don’t want your god-daughter turning out sickly because her stubborn mother wouldnt give in and give up smoking. It’s easier to quit now, rather than later. Buy her the patch. If she bitches, back off and pray that she gets in her right mind. Take care and hope she quits, girl.

Carol asks…

HELP!!!! how do i get my PREGNANT bestfriend to stop SMOKING?

My friend is 6 months pregnant now and she smokes cigarettes, pot and black and milds. I have tried several times to get her to stop the last time i confronted her about it we got into an argument… She claims that her baby is gonna be ok because her grandma smoked with all 9 children and they all came out just fine. Which by the way is not true i met most of them…. Some i can’t even understand when they speak and most of them are in prison or on the streets selling weed. I have stressed and cried over this i feel so sorry for the baby any advice on what i should do????

Werner Michael answers:

At the end of the day you are hanging with the wrong people and it’s really your friends choice unless she asks for advice

Mark asks…

Fiance smoking still – pregnant – what do I do?

I stopped the moment I found out I was pregnant – which yes, I know I entirely should have and it is much more important for the mother to stop than the father.

Also – we are to be married VERY soon.. sometimes I feel like saying I dont even want to marry you bc of this. He has lied and broken promises…
Yes, he smokes outside. We always have!
His new thing is “I dont want to quit. I know I dont need to smoke but I want to. I like it.”

Wow….right?

Werner Michael answers:

You have the right to be frusterated. And he already broke one promise so you dont know if he will actually quit when the baby come do you?

Well i think that you need to stay persistant. Make sure he realizes how important it is for him to stop smoking. Then tell him how much it means to you. And you need to help by getting him on nicotine gum.
That sort of stuff because you cant just tell a man…….. They usually need a little push.

I hope i have been a least a little bit of help. And i also hope all goes well. Good luck with everything and congratulations on the engagement and the child :)

James asks…

can you have a miscarriage if you quit smoking when you find out your pregnant?

When I found out I was pregnant i was 4W4D prego. I stopped smoking immediatly. A week later i had bleeding which subsided and the baby was still okay. Then at 9 weeks I had more bleeding and i lost the baby. could it be because i quit cold turkey? Alot of people say its good to gradualy quit, and i shouldn’t have quit cold turkey, but thats what the doctor told me to do. I was smoking close to 1 pack a day for about 4 years. help plz!?!

Werner Michael answers:

I really doubt that’s what caused it. Miscarriages are actually more common than you’d think, but people don’t talk about them much. I had one at 6 weeks and have never smoked in my life and am in generally good health. I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it, most likely there was something wrong when the baby initially formed or implanted where it would not have carried to term no matter what you did. Quitting smoking was the best thing for your baby and the best thing for you. Stay off the cigarettes so you’ll be healthy and smoke-free when you get pregnant again.

Thomas asks…

Pregnant and neighbor wont stop smoking!!?

I just found out I might be pregnant. I am so freaking out b/c my neighbor who lives in the apartment below us wont stop smoking!! The smoke creeps up into our apartment and it’s all I can smell. Not to mention I am allergic!! I’ve talked to her about it and she wont stop! Even when I go into her apartment she smokes!! The worst part is that she is the landlord’s daughter! How can I just convince her to smoke outside? My husband and I can literally not afford to move at all! There is no one we can stay with and here is the only place we can be!! HELP!

Werner Michael answers:

1. She’s not breaking any laws.
2. Just because you don’t like it, doesn’t mean everyone has to stop.
3. Stop going over there if she smokes.
4. Move to a cave in Montana where nobody smokes.

If there’s no solution, then there’s no problem.

David asks…

How do i get my pregnant gf to stop Smoking?

Me and my gf have just found out were having a baby (only last tuesday) and were both over the moon. The only thing is my gf continues to smoke, and she finks this is ok as all her family have done it it the past and never had no problems ( It was respectable in the 80`s… Lol).

Iv talked to her about it and she has agreed to speke to the doctor about getting help quiting this wednesday, when she has her apointment. I just dont fink she has the will power to do it.

What else can i do to try and get her to stop ?

Werner Michael answers:
