Michael asks…
Need help! Pregnant trying to stop smoking?
Ok I am 13 weeks pregnant I would really love to stop smoking for my childs health. I have found it sooo hard. I smoked all during my first pregnancy and my Daughter is fine. I know its selfish but I have a very stressful life. Any tips, words of encouragement, please ladies or guys I need help!!!!

Werner Michael answers:
You should just stop…it isn’t about you anymore, you think your life is stressful now, try it with a sick or mentally challenged child. You lucked out with your first pregnancy, you are playing Russian roulette with your innocent children.

Donna asks…
Best way to quit smoking if pregnant?
Okay, now we all know that smoking during pregnancy is not good for bubs (and smoking full stop is just bad for you health), so please, no moral high ground on the dangers of smoking.
Not being a smoker myself, I have no idea how to help a friend who is a smoker and is pregnant. She says she wants to quit, but going cold turkey just caused her to become really anxious.
I’m hoping others on here have been through something similar and can share their story on how they quit smoking when they found out they were pregnant. Or if anyone has any sound advice it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I got referred to a smoking cessation by my midwife, she went through all the different types of things i could try eg gum patches and everything that would be safe for me to have during pregnancy, i found the lozenges worked wonders. For me talking about smoking is a touchy subject i felt as though i couldn’t give up and i was being selfish and to an extent i was being selfish because i put my needs before the baby. The women i saw gave me a breath tests i had to take which showed how much carbon monoxide was in my system and to see it on the screen and know what im passing onto my baby was enough for me to know that i had to stop smoking. All women are different and they need different types of help and support, i found it difficult to give up because my partner smokes and so does my mum and my partners family also smoke. Knowing what could happen to the baby if continuing to smoke really shocked me, there is not really much you can do accept offer her emotional support and just be there for her for advice, tell her she can call you up and talk on the phone or anything to get her mind off smoking helps, i found that doing the ironing or washing or doing something that i couldn’t take a brake from eg going shopping in public places where you cant smoke, the hardest bit is the cravings BUT they only last about 3 minutes and then that’s it. It is difficult to give up and i do feel for women who try to give up because there pregnant, but at the end of the day knowing why you gave up in the first place will always be something positive im sorry i cant offer much more then this i hope she gets the help she needs good luck to both of you
edit…the first week is the hardest after that it gets ALOT easier as long as she can go the first week without one then she will know she can go the rest of her life

Jenny asks…
What if you drink during early pregnancy?
I have a very regular cycle, but I just missed a period. I am afraid to even take a pregnancy test because I have been drinking on weekends and I have been around a lot of smoking lately. I am going to stop drinking obviously until I find out that I am not pregnant…..but has the damage already been done????
Anyone know if the effects of drinking and second hand smoke are less severe early in pregnancy? Or more severe?
help!

Werner Michael answers:
The first month or two the placental blood barrier isn’t fully attached and you will be okay. Just stop drinking now and don’t worry! Worrying is worse for a baby than anything! I drank and smoked the first couple of months with my little girl before I even knew I was pregnant and she came out just fine. It’s the drinking and smoking in the second and third trimesters that is most detrimental.
Just remember that the placenta also acts as a filter to toxins and some chemicals can’t pass through anyway.
Your baby is just fine. Congratulations!!

Werner Michael answers:
First off i want to say that I tend to believe that if a baby is going to die from SIDS or other reasons it can be from a mother that smoked or didn’t. I feel that when something is wrong with a baby that is what that baby is meant to be. I also of course believe that quitting anything bad for us helps stop the risk of any bad happenings to unborn children but people in this world have got to stop blaming the mother and or father for anything that may go wrong. NO mother or father wants anything bad to happen to their unborn child. It is very hard for some mothers to quit smoking and for others it is not. Most 30-40 year old living today were born just fine with mothers that smoke back then full fledge during their pregnancies and so today also. We can try to quit smoking but we can only do what we can do. Do not listen to any rude comments that are given to you. You love that baby growing in your belly and just do the best you can on quitting and or cutting down. DO NOT STRESS yourself out though because stress can be just as bad-anyone want to say the mother that is a supposed saint is a bad mother if shegets stressed while she is pregnant because supposedly that can cause problems also.

I am about 5 months pregnant and have tried, unsuccessfully, to stop smoking. My Obgyn has prescribed Wellbutrin to help me quit. Are there any studies showing the effect on a fetus/do the pros outweigh the cons/

This might sound like a stupid question but here goes?
I found out i was 5-6 WEEKS pregnant last on monday. im a smoker and i no its harm full for the baby but i was also told alot of women stop smoking and drinking during pregnancy Straight away and the body can go into shock and cause miscarriage im really confused and don’t no what to do please help

Werner Michael answers:
My Dr. Told me not to quit. Quitting causes stress and will harm the
baby. So I cut back to 5-7 a day. The result. 3 pregnancies, 3 big
and healthy babies. All because I listened to my Dr. His advice
benefited my children.
I don’t drink period, so that was never a problem.

James asks…
pregnant & smoking..?
Okay first I know that this may sound awful to some. I found out I was pregnant in January after a miscarriage in Dec. I completley went cold turkey and quit smoking, It was the hardest thing ever because I have been doing it for 12 years non stop and it was just… crazy. Anyway In March I took one drag of a cigarette and now since then I have a couple here & there and I just feel so awful. Has anyone smoked during pregnancy and what was the outcome. I have a 10 year old I smoke with like 3 cigs a day… I was 15 then… I just want to hear from people who can maybe some how help. Other than that I do everything I am supposed to do.
sorry let me fix that I DONT SMOKE WITH MY 10 year old… I have a ten year old and when I was pregnant with her I smoked 3 to 4 cigs a day…. I am almost 4 months pregnant now… I just started again this month.(March-April)

Werner Michael answers:
I smoked with my first and she is very healthy never had any problems with my pregnancy. She’s for and has had a cold twice in her life and that the extent of her medical history.
I smoked with my second she has had more colds than the other but she is still health and has never had any problem.
With this one my dr. Told me not to quit but to limit my self to 1-5 a day because quitting would cause to much stress on the baby and me. So it all depends. I never smoked more than 4 a day while i was pregnant and it does have lots of risks so just because others have done it with out any issues doesn’t mean that your baby won’t have issues. Oh and one more thing, they say that your baby will be born with a lower birth weight if you smoke. My girls were 7lbs. 14oz. And 7lbs. 13 oz.. Good luck to you.

My co worker smoked weed while she was pregnant for both of her kids and they turned out beautiful and smart. Her oldest (2 years old) can have full out conversations with people, count, do her abcs. I am not saying its a good thing to smoke while pregnant but that was my experiance. Personally I stopped smoking about 2 years ago because I got bored with it.
