Your Questions About Help To Stop Smoking During Pregnancy

Robert asks…
What is the best way to stop smoking during pregnancy?
I just need help!!!!

Werner Michael answers:
Talk to your doctor! There are lots of programs and resources out there for pregnant women who want to quit smoking.
It really all depends on your level of willpower — some women can throw them down cold turkey and others slowly cut down. If you were smoking A LOT (like a pack a day or more) before you found out you were pregnant, it might be less stressful to you and your baby to cut down instead of abruptly stopping. Of course, that all depends on whether or not you will be able to resist the urge to smoke as usual if you still have cigs laying around.
I quit smoking 2 years ago and I’m SO thankful that I didn’t have to do it during pregnancy. Its hard but you can definitely do it! Good luck!

I was a smoker and it took awhile to quit. I cut down immensely and finally did quit. Ask any doctor and there really isn’t any proven facts that smoking will harm an unborn baby. It is no different than breathing in big city fumes day after day. Sweetie, your baby is just fine and your doctor will tell you that too.
Those that are saying OMG you need to quit (which you already did), weren’t smokers to begin with.

Charles asks…
some help quit smoking during pregnancy pls?
Im 18wks pregnant and I stopped smoking during my whole first trimester, but lately work has got me so frustrated and stressed and being away from my husband is driving me crazy..I started smoking again, but i dont want to hurt my baby..can some one please give me advice or some comfort on this??

Werner Michael answers:
Ooh, I have to say after having smoked off and on for years and knowing so many smokers, good for you for trying to quite.
First of all, when you feel like a fix do something quick to delay it, thereby teaching mind and body to wait… Try drinking large glass water (always need more anyway), go to the bathroom, check the laundry, take 10 deep breaths, eat little snack like half apple or crackers, do 5/mins stretching excersizes
2. Limit yourself to something like 5/day for a week, smoke have and save the other half so it seems like more, but its taking less to satisfy the craving. Then next week go to 4/day and so on, or try 2 wks per cig ration, this is how I did it prego #1
3. 1800-quitenow? Will pay for patches, which is better than the inhaled smoke, try your ins too since most of them want you to quite anyway.

Other Possible Stop Smoking Methods/ Med’s for Pregnancy?
My wife is having some serious trouble with the whole “Quitting Smoking Thing”. Her OB/GYN prescribed Hydroxyzine 25mg dosage, but about all it does is put her in a coma. As soon as she wakes up, she wants one. She seriously cut back (around 5 a day), and all she smokes is Ultra Lights, but it’s still brutal hard on her to quit completely.
Any Medical answers other than people complaining about the risks of smoking during pregnancy or Anti-smoking rhetoric. We know that already, and She is legitimately trying to stop smoking, but it’s kinda kicking her butt. Help please!

Werner Michael answers:
My doctor told me that Nicorette or any other “quit smoking” agents would be fine. If you have the patch, the baby is going to get nicotine either through the cigarette or the patch.
Ultra lites don’t make a difference though.
It is most definitely a very hard thing to give up, and kudos to her for wanting to quit!
Will power is a good thing too. Make sure you’re encouraging her not to smoke, and that it is best for the health of her and the baby!
She’s not the only one who has/does smoke during pregnancy!
Good Luck!

Question on smoking during pregnancy? Plz help…?
I don’t smoke , I have tried it when younger and never liked it. My sister is 27 yrs. Old and pregnant with her 2 daughter. She never smoked during her first pregnancy but she has used heroin about 2 years ago on and off for about a year. She has been clean since march when she found out she was pregnant, we are extremely proud of her abstinence, but most of all her choice to take this step in the right directio, and also the bravery to tell us, and have the proof that she has been cleaned since she was the one that took the steps to be clean and is drug tested every week, and is actually back to the person we knew with her job and school and things like that. The problem is that she can’t stop smoking! And the doctor advised her not to use any over the counter stuff just to quit!!! She says that she feels like smoking after taking subutex which is what she is on and will be on until about 2 months after baby is born… has anyone smoked during their pregnancy? Was the child affected? Was the baby ok? I don’t mean to sound ignorant but I just don’t know anyone who smoked during pregnancy… also I am asking because at the 29th week checkup the baby was a little underweight and now the doctor wants another ultrasound just to watch out for growth? Has this happened 2 anyone? Pls answere and thank you in advance.. also want to say that she has only 2 months 2 go is there anything she could do to make the baby stronger? Anything she should eat? Etc…

Werner Michael answers:
I don’t know anything medically but my mother smoked while she was pregnant with me and other than being early everything was fine (I wasn’t even underweight and suffer from no major medical problems that I know of.) The only strange thing is like the smell of smoke (until Julie said it i thought i was the only one…) If you want more information though the march of dimes has a very informative site, where it mentions the biggest problems are premature births and low birth weight (http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/14332_1171.asp)

Linda asks…
smoking during pregnancy?!?! HELP!?
I’m looking for ways to stop smoking.. Ive been TTC forever and i’m on clomid… What did you do when you found out you were preggo?? How did you stop? I know i cant use the patch or pills.. Also will just quitting cold turkey affect the baby since your body will go through withdrawls?

Werner Michael answers:
I don’t have a solution for you, since I am not a smoker but I just wanted to say that I applaud your efforts to stop smoking before getting pregnant. Being pregnant makes it easier for a lot of women to be healthier in their lifestyle choices, maybe it has to do with the nausea many women experience. Either way, I am sure that quitting cold turkey will be better than smoking a little while pregnant.
I don’t think there is such a thing as nicotine withdrawal- other than moodiness.

William asks…
Smoking during pregnancy?
My sister is pregnant. She’s 8 months along and has been struggling to quit since she found out. She’s cut down, quit, then started again and is having trouble quitting now. She doesn’t smoke like a pack a day or anything, but she does still smoke and it worries me! I love her and I know she loves her baby and feels bad about it, but how can I get her to quit for good? Would it even matter now since she’s already been smoking? What can it do to her baby? I mean, her ultrasounds and doctors say the baby is doing great and already weighs more than average. Should our family still worry? I know she is under stress right now and I don’t know if completely quitting would make things worse for her, but we just want the baby to be okay. Are there any health risks I can tell her about to help her stop smoking, or should the baby be okay since the doctors say so? She couldn’t be deformed when she’s born, could she?

Werner Michael answers:
Encourage her to quit but support her either way. A doc can prescribe her Welbutrin to help her with the cravings if that’s an issue. But your family should relax. I didn’t smoke with my first 2 and I did with my 3rd. He was my biggest and healthiest child…so you never know.

Donald asks…
What helped you quit smoking during pregnancy?
I would really like non-judgmental answers. I have been a smoker for about 10 years, my husband and I just found out we were pregnant last week. I haven’t been to thrilled about the pregnancy yet because the last 3 pregnancy‘s ended between 6-8 weeks in a miscarriage. I have cut back (from a pack and a half per day) to about 5 ciggs per day or less. I am really trying to quit. Please be advised that my doctor told me that the addiction my body has to nicotine could cause problems if I quit cold turkey hence the slow withdraw. I guess I am just waiting for the other shoe to drop and this pregnancy to be a miscarriage and then I feel like all this work that I am putting into stopping smoking will be useless.
Man these hormones really get ya. I got on here expecting some really harsh answers, but you all made me cry in a good way. Thank you for being such wonderful people. You lifted my spirits a bit.

Werner Michael answers:
Aubrey, congratulations.
Stopping smoking is hard, whether you go cold turkey or not. Now you’ve got a fantastic reason to stop, hypnosis may help by giving you that extra bit of willpower when you need it. Self hypnosis a couple of times a day will really make a difference. As a bonus it will also help you to relax and may help with the stresses brought about by those hormones.
Good luck!
